The default marker (when no discrete tab stops have been defined) is the smaller inverted T ("up tack"). Once you define discrete tab stops at various positions with various Types, you will see bigger markers used instead, which allows us to tell them apart. This was the same in OOo 3.3. I don't think it's possible to change the default tab type for the whole document / the whole of Writer, there is no option in Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > General. If the default, small up tack marker is changed to reflect the default left Type, we'd have to make sure it also works for when using complex text layout like RTL (automatically changed to right Type). UX/Design team, what do you think?
Created attachment 189357 [details] Ruler with center tab and default tab (In reply to Stéphane Guillou (stragu) from comment #3) > The default marker (when no discrete tab stops have been defined) is the > smaller inverted T ("up tack"). The screenshot illustrates the situation. > I don't think it's possible to change the default tab type... Different question but possible per default template. > If the default, small up tack marker is changed to reflect the default left > Type, we'd have to make sure it also works for when using complex text > layout like RTL (automatically changed to right Type). The 'up tack' marker should probably not get mixed up with the 'tab' marker. The latter tab stop as inserted via paragraph attribute defines where the tab ends (and how the text flows at this stop) while the first shows the position where every single tab character ends up. We could change the up tack into a vertical ruler, for example. But I like the current design (and if we follow MSO and introduce a bar tab stop this would be wrong anyway). And RTL/LTR definitely needs to be considered. MSO does not show any symbol for the default tab stop.
I guess I don't understand Eimar's request. Is it: 1) replace the default, smaller up tacks that denote default tab starts with a left marker of same size, so it better shows what kind the default it is; or 2) some other issue with custom tab stops created in Format > Paragraph > Tabs not showing the correct larger marker?
We discussed the topic in the design meeting. It's a minor issue since the automatic tab stop indicator are tiny and not shown at all under Windows (likewise MSO does). However we agreed that a proper angle pointing left- or right wards depending on the text flow removes potential confusion.
Dear Elmar, To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today, LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed bugs which have not been touched for over a year. There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in getting confirmation that the bug is still present. If you have time, please do the following: Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/ If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice. If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice. Please DO NOT Update the version field Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker) Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular meaning that is not appropriate in this case) If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a REGRESSION. To do so: 1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/ 2. Test your bug 3. Leave a comment with your results. 4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo'; 4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat: https://web.libera.chat/?settings=#libreoffice-qa Thank you for helping us make LibreOffice even better for everyone!
