Description Penny 2023-09-05 13:39:48 UTC
Description:
UK Dictionary is enabled and US Dictionary is disabled.

The word "Councillor" is incorrectly highlighted as spelled incorrectly.

Please fix.

Is this an isolated case? Maybe a review of the UK dictionary is required to ensure the words within are spelled correctly.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open writer and Enable UK Dictionary
2. Disable US Dictionary
3. Type the word "Councillor"

Actual Results:
The word "Councillor" is incorrectly highlighted as spelled incorrectly.

Expected Results:
Accepted that the word "Councillor" is spelled correctly.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
erm, not sure what else would be of value.
Comment 1 Penny 2023-09-05 13:45:25 UTC
I have investigated further and the number of words in the UK dictionary spelled incorrectly is countless.
Comment 2 Julien Nabet 2023-09-05 14:20:38 UTC
I think it should be fixed in brand new release 7.6.0 thanks to
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?id=24f938c016b62aa8f05e23e2be4f51e7ead51e65
("Councillor" is present here:
https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/dictionaries/en/en_GB.dic?r=03a891f1#18752)

I don't know this patch has been retrieved in 7.5 branch and so would be available for 7.5.5
If you've got some time, you can give it a try.
Comment 3 Penny 2023-09-05 16:15:38 UTC
Thanks.
I have upgraded to 7.6.0.3 and the issue persists.

Words identified so far as highlighted as being incorrectly spelled when spelled correctly...

Analyse
Authorise
Councillor

I wonder if the UK dictionary is totally defunct?
Comment 4 Julien Nabet 2023-09-05 17:16:20 UTC
On pc Debian x86-64 with master sources (future 24.2 version) updated today, I don't reproduce this.
Indeed, by default it select "English US" and the three words (Analyse, Authorise, Councillor) are redlined.
Then when I selected the three words and chose "English UK", it was ok.

On which env are you? (Linux, Windows, macOS)
Did you uninstall previous version before installing this one?
Indeed, there may have been some mixup when having several LO versions.

Also, could you try https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps#Corrupted_user_profile ?

@Penny

1. What is the language of your operating system's input method?
2. When you say you enabled the UK dictionary and disabled the US dictionary, what were you steps took?
3. When you highlight words like "Councillor", which language does Writer indicate in its bottom bar?
4. Do you have "ignore system input language" checked under Settings > Language Settings > Languages > Enhanced Language Support?

I believe it is something to do with the particular document.
When I created a new document and typed the three words they were not highlighted.

I will track down the document and perform an investigation and get back to you.

You can also try this:
- Menu Tools/Language/For All Text
- Choose English UK

So you'll be sure that the text will be considered as English UK and not English US and so LO should use English UK dictionary.
Comment 12 Penny 2023-09-11 09:45:49 UTC
I had a look at the document and whilst I was scrolling down the pages I kept moving the cursor keeping my eye on the bottom bar.

At a location the language changes from UK to USA. The location is persistent meaning everything above the point is checked using UK and everything below is checked using USA.

To be fair, I have not experienced this before and I appreciate that this is likely an intended function.

How do I remove this change of behaviour? Many Thanks.
