Description TH 2023-09-10 18:26:12 UTC
Description:
For versions of LibreOffice AFTER 7.4.7.2:

When Colors in the WINDOWS OS (for Windows 10, that's Settings -> Personalization -> Colors) are set to Dark (either for "app mode" or everything), AND a Writer document HAS custom styles AND "Show previews" is enabled (checked), then most styles (custom and included) in the Styles sidebar are NOT legible, as they are being rendered in a dark font against a dark backtround and are thus much too dark to read and see.

At the same time, most styles previewed in the Styles dropdwon menu are likewise rendered much too dark to read or see.

Changing the Colors in WINDOWS for "app mode" to Light, enables viewing styles, irrespective of whether "Show previews" is enabled. But most of us do NOT want to use Light colors in Windows, for anything.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. In the Windows 10 or later OS, set Colors to Dark for "app mode" (under Settings -> Personalization -> Colors).
2. Create a new text document in Writer.
3. Create a CUSTOM (paragraph or character) style in the text document, using the Styles sidebar.
4. Check (enable) "Show previews" in the Styles sidebar.

Actual Results:
Styles in Styles dropdown menu (upper-left area of the interface) are now mostly too dark to read or see. AND most paragraph and character styles in the Styles sidebar are now mostly too dark to read or see.

Expected Results:
All previewed styles should be clearly visible, with a light font on a dark background, rather than a very dark font on a black background.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
Changing the theme under Personalization settings makes NO difference to the above. And there are NO Color settings that make a difference either. These issues are new to LibreOffice Writer, after version 7.4.7.2, meaning they affect ALL current versions after 7.4.7.2 (e.g., they affect 7.5.x and 7.6.x).

I tried both in-place upgrade installations and clean installations of LibreOffice in a virtual machine. Regardless, the above behavior is the same. So the issue is NOT in any way related to my user profile, to prior installation settings, etc. These are newly introduced interface BUGS, which HARM the usability of LibreOffice Writer when Windows is set to use Dark mode for applications.

Do note that for the Styles dropdown control (menu), it does NOT matter if "Show previews" is enabled in the Styles sidebar, as ALL styles shown in the Styles dropdown are always in "preview" mode.

Thank you for the report, TH.

In your custom style, can you please check what the font colour is? Is it Black, or Automatic, or something else?

If it isn't Automatic, we can mark your report as a duplicate of bug 137705.

Interesting. Yes, my font color is set to Black for nearly all of my Custom Styles. Note as well that various in-built styles (e.g., Text and Chapter) have the SAME issue, as those too are set to use Black for the font color. I did find something else that affects this same bug: Area. If Area is set to something other than None, a similar issue occurs.

ALSO, and this is "unrelated," but I want to be sure you folks are aware: if one selects the lighter-colored Preinstalled Themes under Personalization (Options), the icons in the menu ribbon (at the top of the application), become unreadable (they remain white, etc., and that does NOT work with the lighter themes).
