Description hughfe 2023-09-28 23:27:23 UTC
Description:
Inserting a number of photos in a document. I paste the photo, when pasted it may overlap a previous photo. I then drag it to a new position in the document. Writer crashes. Document is now about 5MB in size. If I save as soon as I paste the photo (before moving it) it seems to be a bit safer. Have to save after every move. I am resizing, sometimes cropping the photos in Windows Paint, then copying them to Writer without saving them.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start a new document, type some stuff
2.copy a photo from Paint, paste into document
3.repeat (2.)
4. move new photo in document

Actual Results:
Writer just crashes

Expected Results:
Writer should not crash ;)

Reproducible: Always

Actually, it might be resizing, rather than moving that causes the crash.

Scrambled display, instead of complete crash.

Writer did not crash this time, but scrambled some of the video memory?

Can you please:
1. double-check that your graphic card drivers are up to date
2. share your Skia log from <user profile>/cache/skia.log
3. test again without Skia/Vulkan, by using Tools ▸ Options ▸ LibreOffice ▸ View ▸ Force Skia software rendering

More info on Skia: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps#Graphics-related_issues_(_Skia_)

Thank you!

1. Windows reports driver is current: Nvidia 30.0.14.7444
Nvidia control panel reports Hardware Quadro K600, Driver version 474.44
Nvidia system info report attached.

2. skia.log contents:
RenderMethod: vulkan
Vendor: 0x10de
Device: 0xffa
API: 1.2.175
Driver: 474.176.0
DeviceType: discrete
DeviceName: Quadro K600
Denylisted: no

3. I don't know what to say! Enabled Force skia and restarted, pasting and moving images worked properly. Disabled Force skia again and restarted and it still all worked properly. The only other change was deleting an old crash report from 2022.

If I can reproduce the crash again I will report back.

Thank you for the detailed info, much appreciated!
As you can't reproduce the crash - for now -, let's mark as "works for me", but please set back to "unconfirmed" if it comes back (and please provide more details as to how it could be reproduced by others).
You can also double-check in your About dialog that you are indeed back to Skia/Vulkan, just to make sure.
Thank you!

Thank you very much, Stéphane, "works for me" is good.
I recently upgraded Libre office, and it is possible that I had not rebooted between running the upgrade and editing this document, today the PC has been rebooted and works fine (standard Microsoft cure: Ctrl/Alt/Del!).
Help/About says: UI render: Skia/Vulkan; VCL: win
Thanks again.
