Description John 2023-10-02 11:50:33 UTC
Description:
When using Libre Writer I am running into an issue with Language tool. I am running Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon, kernal 5.15.0-84-generic. 12th Gen Intel© Core™ i5-1240P × 12. I have language tool version 6.2 (2023-07-31 15:55:28 +0000, 5726252. To get it to even work, I had to upgrade my JAVA to 20. If I back my Java to 17, writer works just fine, but I cannot use language tool at all. It disappears from the menu.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.set language tool to on
2.set to use the server to check
3.run check text

Actual Results:
One in three times, the process will finish the spell check and then hang, not finishing the check and crashing. Note I do not need to run the spell check to cause this issue. About 1 in six openings will just lock up the writer without running the spell check. This will happen anytime I have language tool set active. The program will either crash and force close option pops up, or I have to force close it manually, causing me to lose my work

Expected Results:
no hangs or crashes, and able to use language tool

Reproducible: Sometimes

Thanks for the report.
Do you use the LanguageTool extension, or did you set it up as in https://languagetool.org/insights/post/product-libreoffice/#how-to-enable-languagetool-on-libreoffice ?
Did you disable LightProof?

I have been using Language Tool 6.4 stable (the latest version) with LibreOffice 24.2 and 24.8. I use the Language Tool extension. It is unreliable, it can crash itself, or whole of the LibreOffice writer can crash, and at times it freezes. Sometimes, the CPU overworks to an excessive extent, I would say. At times the Language Tool extension does not even start up after more than one run through a document. I would say that the problems are more frequent using using longer text documents, and perhaps more complicated text documents with tables, comment boxes, or many paragraphs. I guess there are several bugs, and the the faults appear to arise a bit sporadically, so I regret that I can not give precise ways to reproduce the errors. Nevertheless, to reproduce these faulty effects, I suggest spell checking long documents containing many spelling and grammar errors, and see what faults arise.

My impression is that 24.2 is worse at using the Language Tool than 24.8.

For some people, the offline version is preferable to the online version of Language Tool, because the information is kept on the computer and so it promises more confidentiality.

I reiterate the need to make offline Language Tool work better. I do not use the online link to Language Tool, so I can not comment on who that works.

I noticed John had sent more info directly to my inbox instead of as a comment here, back in October 2023. Here is the message:

> I was trying to use the version that came with LibreOffice. I did end up having to disable it, and then downloading LanguageTool from their site and installing it as an independent add-on. Once I did that, I went in and deleted the LibreOffice file in the config folder. This still did not work after restarting. I went back in and noticed a config file for LanguageTool. Once I removed that and the one for LibreOffice at the same time, I have been able to run for about two weeks without an issue.

> I am still not sure what the problem was because it locked everything up and would not allow me to get to the error codes. I had to force a shutdown of LibreOffice or even log out to close it.

John, it would be appreciated if you could test again the integration (in Options > Languages and Locales) with the latest release of LibreOffice and see if you still get crashes.

(vena.cava, if you have issues with the extension, please check other reports tracked in bug 155314 or on the extension's issue tracker[1], as John was reporting an issue with the LT integration.)
