Description liszca 2023-10-10 14:49:08 UTC
Description:
Hi!
I am not happy with the default workflow provided by LibreOffice Writer when creating a new document. In detail its the default formation of pasted Images.

In the video I want to show you how it is and then comment what I think about this default handling.

Please have look at the Video.

what are my complaints:
when beginning a new document I write down in a not so detailed manner.
what disrupts this quick workflow is the default formating of a new image. Isn't it possible to set "Wrap" for the pictures in a different way by default? For Example "None"?

Also its very distracting having this icon bares come up when selecting a picture and then back to text and vice versa. Couldn't this be done in a more static manner, so the Layout of the UI is less affected?

Steps to Reproduce:
please see video

Actual Results:
when working with images the default workflow feels confusing

Expected Results:
Insert an image and write your text above or below it. If you need it different change "Wrap"

Reproducible: Always

This was done on purpose and is tracked in bug 156970.

Similar, although that one is for anchor and this is for wrap. But I assume if we give the option for one, we should give the option for the other.

Workaround for this Wrap issue is to change the default Graphics style. See answer in: https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/how-can-i-set-the-default-wrap-mode-for-inserting-images-in-text-in-writer/14615

liszca, can you try changing the default Graphics style in the Styles Sidebar > Frames, and set the Wrap to "None"? Is that sufficient for you?

Ok thats it about the style menu.

The other thing about inserting images looks like it got a change. I want to play around with it in detail, but having a short look it feels a lot more usable.

That Styles dropdown issue is tracked in bug 156970 already. If you want to add to the discussion, please do so there. You can link to your screenshots there if you want.
Let's keep this report about image wrap.

I'll set back to "needinfo" then. Please test with LO 24.2, see the suggestion about default Graphics style in comment 4, and let us know if you still thinks something is missing.
Thank you!

I would like to have the default Image positioning like that:

If a text block, heading or Title was left|center|right the image by default uses the same alignment until its changed.
Thinking about a name for it I would call it "Dynamic" and the other ones "Dynamic Through" and "Dynamic Optimal".

It would also fit with languages which are written from right to left. So in my opinion a win-win situation.

What exactly is the question for UX? If adding the option "Follow paragraph settings" under Position & Size > Position > Horizontal makes sense? Don't think that makes it easier to use.

I would rather customize shortcuts for Align Left/Right and press one key combination.

Partially solved with bug 99646.

Dreaming loud: imagine there is a (default) image style, with positioning (not size...) defined, that is used to place an inserted image.
(Prolly too complicated for users..)

We discussed the topic in the design meeting.

The decision for Dynamic wrap was taken deliberately in bug 87720 comment 43 and 44. It is possible (and the suggested workflow) to edit the frame style "Graphics" and to manage the default via templates.

Nevertheless considering that we made it possible to change the default anchor via tools > options the recommendation is to also provide such setting for the default wrap (similar to Microsoft).
