Description Pete Edwards 2023-11-12 06:50:02 UTC
Description:
When I include italic formatted text in footnotes in Writer and export to epub, the text in the footnote is visible but not italic.
I am viewing the epub document in Apple Books application.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Create Writer document with a footnote that includes italic formatted text.
2.Export document to epub format.
3.View epub document to see if footnote text includes italic formatting.

Actual Results:
Footnote text appears in epub document viewed in Apple Books app, but footnote text that was italic in the original Writer document appears as regular text in the epub document.

Expected Results:
Footnote text to appear as italic in the epub document, just like in the original Writer document.

Reproducible: Always

Thanks for the report.
I could not reproduce with the attached document in:

Version: 24.2.0.0.alpha0+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 7d357628d6e8ce3f9e3c3a567ada21f02bce8d42
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

nor in:

Version: 7.5.8.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: f718d63693263970429a68f568db6046aaa9df01
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US

I opened the resulting epub in Calibre, Okular and Foliate, all apps showed the italicised word in the footnote.

Can you please test with the attached document, and share another test document if the issue is specific to one of your files?

EPUB exported by LO 24.2.alpha0+

Hi Stephane,

Thanks for following up on this. Your help is greatly appreciated!

I tried importing your epub document into Apple Books, and it says, "No such file or directory".

So I installed Calibre on my Mac, and it imported your epub file and displayed it correctly, with italic and bold in the footnote and endnote.

Then I opened your LibreOffice file and exported to epub.
I imported the resulting epub file into Apple Books. It imported ok, but did not display italic and bold correctly in the footnote or endnote.
When I imported the epub file into Calibre, it displayed the footnote and endnote correctly.

My conclusion is that the problem is with the Apple Books app.

Thanks for your help with this!

Thank you for the quick reply, Pete!
This issue is from 2015 but I'm unsure if it's still relevant: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6896377
The LO export contains the following CSS span class, which is used by both the footnote and endnote text:

.span2 {
  font-size: 10.0000pt;
  font-style: italic;
}

In any case, if it works with Calibre it is very likely to be an issue on Apple Books' side, so closing as "Not our bug".
