Description Samuel Mehrbrodt (allotropia) 2024-01-08 14:13:44 UTC
The status bar entry on the very left (Document modified indicator) should be removed.

Since a few years, the save icon displays the document modified status. Also, the modified status is displayed in the document title.

There is no need for a third place to display this.

-> Remove the document modified indicator from the status bar.

It's a frequently asked feature, see bug 84198. I'd rather make the statusbar configurable, as requested in bug 92406. Any objection to make this ticket a duplicate?

Bug 84198 was filed before we added the modification status to the save icon. See https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice/2015-December/071519.html for the discussion about that.
Also it complains that the status bar thing does is not visible enough, which got solved by adding an indicator to the Save button in the toolbar.

Sure, that's a valid feature request.

Yes :)

As this indicator serves no purpose any longer it should be completely removed in favor of a cleaner UI.

My take: the save indicator occupies not much space, is a good way to give feedback on the save state (considering a11y), and redundancy is not always bad (bug 84198 actually asked for a third ways to show the state). => default should remain on

Up for discussion.

Not always. For a document which hasn't ever been saved, it isn't displayed in the title.

What is the benefit in removing it though, given that it's there?

I'm not that against it, but what will we gain for our effort?

A cleaner UI / less cruft :)

Whether the document is saved or not seems like status to me.

I like the tool tips for the status bar control better than the one in the toolbar. The status control shows the following tool tips:

"The document has been modified. Click to save the document."
"The document has not been modified since the last save."

versus "Save (shortcut)" for the toolbar

No loss of sleep if it does go away :)

We discussed the topic in the design meeting.

Redundant information is not bad per se, the toolbar button is primarily meant to run an action but not to give feedback, and with the Notebookbar UI it's not guaranteed to see the toolbar info. And the statusbar icon looks pretty nice. So let's save our sleep and resolve this NAB/WF.

Rather WF it's a duplicate of bug 92406
