Some suggestions for improving insertion of special characters using the dialog:

Make it possible to reposition the cursor in the document and insert regular characters from the keyboard without having to close the dialog.

and/or Make it possible to construct a string of special characters in the dialog before inserting into the document. There would need to be a means of editing this string before inserting it.

dupe as noted. 

While as for bug 115477 restoring the Special Character dialog's edit buffer would facilitate pasting text runs multi-picked from its char map. It was striped out when we implemented the current 'Favorites' and 'Recents' list bars found on the dialog and its TB split button.
