Description Olivier Mehani 2024-01-27 08:48:11 UTC
Description:
In LO Calc, with the Groupedbar Compact UI, I cannot find a way to bring up the Conditional Formatting dialog.

I looked in the Edit, Styles and Font menus, as well as Paragraph/Format Cell, to no avail.

I tried the Shift+Esc menu, which DOES have the option as “Format / Conditional”, but it doesn't open the dialog either (this issue also happens with the Standard UI, so it's likely a separate bug, where 3-deep menus are not accessible).

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set Groupedbar Compact UI
2. Look for Conditional Formatting everywhere
-> nothing found

alternatively

1. Call HUB with Ctrl+Esc
2. Find Format/Conditional
-> no dialog appears

Actual Results:
nothing found

or

no dialog appears

Expected Results:
Access to Conditional Formatting options

Reproducible: Always

On the upper right side you have "Menu", from which you have 2 alternatives.

A_ Menu > Menubar > use the normal menu Format > Conditional...

B_ Menu > Toolbars > Formatting. This will display the Formatting toolbar, which includes the "Conditional" icon.

Now I have answered your question, but please next time go first to <https://ask.libreoffice.org> or use the users mailing list to ask this kind of questions, leaving this site to bug reports.

Thanks for the alternatives. Both work.

However, I'd still argue that this is a UX bug in the Groupedbar Compact UI, as non-obvious workarounds are needed to access the functionality, and both workarounds specifically re-enabled UI elements that are purposefully disabled by the Groupedbar UI.

The more I think about it, the more I think the fact that it's not accessible via the HUB, despite the option being present, is a separate bug. What do you think?

Just to complete the info, that alternative "B" is only temporal, as individual toolbars don't stick when using alternative UI (i.e. not the Standard UI).

An additional alternative ("C") would be to customize the cell's context menu.

The main issue is that in the Grouped-bar Compact UI, the icons that are part of the Format menu (e.g. Insert Columns/Rows Before, Alignment, Wrap Text) do not have a "down arrow" allowing to open additional actions within the normal Format menu (such as Conditional). There are several ways to arrive to the "Format Cell" dialogue, but that's not what you are looking for in this case.

This seems to be a negative point of the Grouped-bar Compact UI, and not specific to the Conditional action you are looking for in this particular case.

Instead of converting this report into an enhancement request, I would suggest first going to the Ask site (see link in comment 1) and bringing the matter up for discussion. Once users arrive to some clear conclusion (on how to improve the current situation, for instance), then you could open a new ticket as enhancement request, linking to such Ask topic too. Such public discussion might arrive to very diverse suggestions and conclusions.

Just to be clear, feel free to set this report back to "unconfirmed" if you disagree with the proposed approach; maybe someone else has a different POV on this report.
