missing spaces between words

After upgrade to latest release 24.2.1.2 documents originally created with MS Word and thereafter edited with LO 7.6. in .odt format and saved as .docx lost some (but not all) spaces between words, i.e. spaces are not displayed when editing document and export to e. g. PDF shows same missing spaces between words.

Observation: adding a space restores the correct layout (see pictures attached)

It looks like this bug is related to choosing "justify" for text formatting and is related to improper conversion from/to .odt / .docx.

Could you please attach a minimal, sample document for us to test?
Thank you!
Comment 4 michaelweigelt 2024-03-25 12:48:04 UTC
Will do. The original document is based on a MS Word template named "normal.dotm" and has been edited by various people. The final version was composed using LO 7.6. and saved as .docx.

Hi there, thank you for reporting the bug.

I went ahead and wrote up a massive line of text and saved on 7.6, and tried to open it with 24.2.1.2 and I wasn't able to replicate the bug.

I also cannot see the test document with missing spaces, the document I opened seems to have the spaces unlike the screen shot.

Version: 24.2.1.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community

Locale: en-US (en_US); UI: en-US
Calc: CL threaded
Comment 8 michaelweigelt 2024-03-25 14:35:04 UTC
OK. First, I'm on Linux:

Version: 24.2.1.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 420(Build:2)
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); UI: de-DE
Ubuntu package version: 4:24.2.1~rc2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1~lo1
Calc: threaded

Second, mind that the orginal document was created on MS Word using a template there. The document in question is actually a contract template (the test document excferpt is only a part of it).

Third, when printig the document (same with print preview) the "pushed together" line appears as on screen (wysiwyg).

Fourth, the error goes away when switching from justified text to left aligned text but comes back when switching back to justified. This is reproduceable.

Looks like ages ago when backspace was used in ASCII printout to produce bold characters on a printer...

Just went back to the orginal document and could reproduce the bug.

Still no reproduced with:

Version: 24.2.2.1 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: bf759d854b5ab45b6ef0bfd22e51c6dc4fb8b882
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 6.5; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

Opening it warns me of missing hyphenation data for German. I installed https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/german-de-de-frami-dictionaries to by able to hyphenate, and still not reproduced. I also tried saving and reloading the file with both 7.6.5.2 and 24.2.2.2.

What do you use for hyphenation? Any particular settings?
Please also test in safe mode (Help > Restart in safe mode) to see if it is linked to your user profile.

OK, we've got the same issue in bug 160170. Also with German hyphenation.
