Created attachment 194102 [details] spreadsheet to test and with screenshots - take a spreadsheet - add color to some cells - chose Tools > Options > Calc > View > Visual Aids > Grid Lines 'Show on colored cells only' -->> grid lines are shown on all cells.. Expected: grid lines are shown on colored cells only. Seen in Version: 24.8.0.0.alpha0+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 05a1217921b7be283c6750a35b90e4feda6e993e CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3 Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US Calc: threaded
Please be mindful of menu View > View Grid Lines, and menu View > Grid and Helplines, not confusing them with similarly-named settings in Options > Calc > View dialog. Some of these settings have an impact on the document, and others have an impact on how the document is seen on the specific installation on the specific device (not necessarily saved on the document). So each of these are intended as different purposes. I mention this because we have seen recent changes in which the options in the View menu are mixed/confused (unfortunately erasing their different purposes) with similar settings within the Options > Calc > View dialog. Not everything is supposed to be saved to the document, so these are not exactly the same, despite their similar naming.

Oh gosh... I've been living under a stone (or other wise too busy) that I missed this... > Some of these settings have an impact on the document, and others have an > impact on how the document is seen on the specific installation on the > specific device (not necessarily saved on the document). It looks as is an improvement of this situation is desired..?
There is also Options > Calc > Grid. This is because Grid is not the same as Gridlines. BTW, it is not "Grid Lines" nor "Grid lines", but rather "Gridlines", in order to identify/differentiate the lines that separate between cells (or show their limits without being a cell “border”) from the other places where the term “grid” is used. So, IDK the reason to have "View Grid Lines" instead of "View Gridlines", and the same for other places. Perhaps it is just to make translations easier? As for: Menu Tools > Options > Calc > View > (Visual Aids) Grid lines > Show on colored cells What other spreadsheet tools do? How _they_ behave? IOW, which of the following naming alternatives matches the expected behavior (which might not be the behavior you seem to expect)?: * Show on colored cells only? * Show on colored cells too? And what is/was the (original) expected influence of the “menu View > View Grid Lines” setting, when combining it with the related “Options > Calc > View” settings? Is there a hierarchical precedence between these? Are these independent (e.g. current temporal view vs setting saved to document)? Considering recent modifications to other items in the View menu and in the Options menu, it is not so easy for me to know the original _expected_ behavior of each of those View items, nor whether they apply (perhaps temporarily on the live document, or per session) to the spreadsheet view (only), or they should actually be saved to the document (too). Actually, I have the same doubts about “menu Options > Calc > View” by now, because of the same reason. So, may I suggest to look at other spreadsheet tools and their behavior regarding this Gridlines setting(s)? I cannot check this by myself ATM, but I believe Excel behaves as Calc too, but I might be misremembering so please do not just trust my words (i.e. if possible, re-create the spreadsheet anew in Excel and review the Gridlines options and behavior). Please also keep in mind that the Gridlines settings are supposed to apply per (selected) worksheet, not per entire workbook.
Hi ady, (In reply to ady from comment #3) > There is also Options > Calc > Grid. I do know the grid and it's use quite well ;) > BTW, it is not "Grid Lines" nor "Grid lines", but rather "Gridlines", in But not used consistently.. > As for: > Menu Tools > Options > Calc > View > (Visual Aids) Grid lines > Show on > colored cells > > What other spreadsheet tools do? How _they_ behave? I think that's a different discussion? We had it ages ago when the three options were added (show, hide, show for cells with bgcolor) > And what is/was the (original) expected influence of the “menu View > View > Grid Lines” setting, when combining it with the related “Options > Calc > > View” settings? In any case, as it is now, the resulting behavior is very confusing. > Considering recent modifications to other items in the View menu and in the > Options menu, it is not so easy for me to know the original _expected_ > behavior of each of those View items, nor whether they apply (perhaps > temporarily on the live document, or per session) to the spreadsheet view > (only), or they should actually be saved to the document (too). Years of experience(?). For the "View" menu, that's how it works in Excel (AFAICR). In Excel – again AFAICR – you can also pre-select multiple worksheets and then change the setting at once for those pre-selected worksheets; Calc behaves differently in this last matter (i.e. always one at a time). Menu "Tools > Options > Calc > View > Grid lines" is supposed to (also) set the initial default status of this setting when creating worksheets. For cells without BG color, if you want gridlines, then neither of these settings can be set to hide: (Note for the following tables: "S.o.c.c == Show on colored cells"): View | Options | Gridlines around cells withOUT BG color ON | Show | yes ON | S.o.c.c | yes ON | Hide | no OFF | Show | no OFF | S.o.c.c | no OFF | Hide | no For cells with background colors: View | Options | Gridlines around cells with BG color ON | Show | no ON | S.o.c.c | yes ON | Hide | no OFF | Show | no OFF | S.o.c.c | no OFF | Hide | no "Show on colored cells" actually means "Show on colored cells too". IIRC, Excel does the same.
(In reply to ady from comment #5) > (Note for the following tables: "S.o.c.c == Show on colored cells"): Thanks ! for these tables that I knew had to be made but didn't start on .. :)
(note, added ref to some former reports to check maybe in a spare hour..)
Possible improvement for consideration... Change the wording from: "Show on colored cells" to: "Show on colored cells too" While it is not perfect for users that don't know the meaning of it (nor to what other cells the "too" is referring), the change would avoid the potential (recurrent) confusion with "Show on colored cells only", which is not the intention of this setting (IIUC).

How about: - Show -> Show (except on background color) - Show on colored cells -> Show (everywhere) - Hide -> Hide Copying UX/Design team in for suggestion of best wording. (In OOo 3.3, grid lines were either on or off, and were shown on all cells. Then the new default in LO 3.3 was to not show them on cells with a background colour, for Excel compatibility. The issue described here is not a regression as the wording has not changed since the third option "Show on colored cells" was introduced in LO 3.5 - see bug 30800 and https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Andreschnabel/Spec_Calc_grid_lines_on_colored_background)
