Description george 2025-05-11 06:03:15 UTC
Description:
LibreOffice Math currently lacks a dedicated command or simple method to place a standard mathematical arc symbol (frown-like curve) over two or more characters, which is a common notation for denoting arcs in geometry

In geometry, it is standard practice to denote an arc between two points, say A and B, with the letters AB and a small arc symbol placed directly above them. This is analogous to how a line segment is denoted with a bar above the letters or a vector with an arrow.

LibreOffice Math provides commands for various accents and symbols over text, but a specific command for the arc symbol over text is missing. Common commands used in other math typesetting systems, such as \overarc{AB} or \overparen{AB}, are not recognized by LibreOffice Math.

Manually positioning a separate arc symbol over text is cumbersome and difficult to align precisely.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open LibreOffice Writer.

2.Go to Insert > Object > Formula to open the LibreOffice Math editor.

3.Attempt to type a formula that places an arc symbol over the letters "AB" using common mathematical typesetting commands or by searching the Elements window for a suitable command/symbol combination.

Actual Results:
There is no readily available command or simple method within LibreOffice Math to place a standard mathematical arc symbol over text like "AB". Commands like \overarc{AB} and \overparen{AB} do not work. Finding and positioning a separate arc symbol is not a practical solution for standard notation.

Expected Results:
LibreOffice Math should provide a simple, dedicated command (e.g., arc{AB}, overarc{AB}, or overparen{AB}) that correctly places a standard mathematical arc symbol over the specified text, similar to how bar{AB} places a line segment or vec{AB} places a vector arrow. This would allow users to easily and accurately represent geometric notation for arcs.

Reproducible: Always

This missing feature makes it difficult for educators, students, and anyone writing mathematical documents in LibreOffice to correctly and easily represent standard geometric notation for arcs. Users are forced to either use incorrect notation, rely on unreliable workarounds, or use external tools to generate the required symbols.

Including this symbol would significantly improve the usability of LibreOffice Math for geometry and other fields requiring this notation.

Yes, this should be added as it is a standard symbology in Mathematics
