Description Paul R 2025-11-30 21:53:16 UTC
Description:
On Linux Mint, Cinnamon, the toolbar and drawing tool icons either do not appear at all, or only a few portions of the icon appear. One must use the tool tip to figure out what each empty button does (or memorize them by position). This bug has persisted across multiple Mint and LibreOffice updates.

Changing the icons from automatic (Colibre (dark)) to Colibre is workaround.

Version information:

Version: 25.8.3.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 580(Build:2)
CPU threads: 16; OS: Linux 6.8; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Ubuntu package version: 4:25.8.3~rc2-0ubuntu0.24.04.1~lo1
Calc: threaded

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open LibreOffice Draw

Actual Results:
Look at the toolbars and drawing tools: icons are missing or partial.

Expected Results:
The toolbars should be visible and usable.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
As part of this bug, I updated LibreOffice to the latest version. This displayed the "Welcome to LibreOffice" dialog. I goofed around with this, going to the Appearance tab. For Icons, the default setting is "Automatic (Colibre (dark))". I tried changing this to "Colibre" and, voila!, the icons become visible and usable.

So, perhaps there is something off with the automatic setting and what it selects for Linux Mint?

Thanks for looking at the bug. As it turns out, the bug still occurs.

* Open the Draw program.
* Open Tools/Options
* Go to the Appearance page
* Under Icons, choose Automatic (Colibre (dark))

The icons immediately become nearly unintelligible, as in the screen shot.
The workaround:

* Under Icons, choose Colibre

The icons are now fully visible and usable.

The gist of this bug is that the default setting, for new users, is the automatic selection of an icon set which renders the icons unusable.

Mint offers multiple "themes". (Start menu, Preferences, Themes). Under the Dark theme, the Colibre (dark) icons appear fine. They are not visible under the Light theme. I have my Mint setting at Mixed.

There is a complication.

* Select the Automatic (Colibre (dark)) icons in Draw.
* Switch to the Dark theme in Mint. The icons are visible.
* Switch to the Light theme in Mint. The icons are visible. (?)
* Switch to the Colibre icons. They are visible.
* Switch back to the Automatic (Colibre (dark)) icons. They are now not visible.

I can't explain why the same Draw icons settings are visible in one step above, but not when reselected.

Here is a theory: whatever Draw does to figure out the Automatic icon selection is not detecting the Light theme on Mint. It thinks the theme is Dark, and so is choosing the Colibre (dark) icons when it should have chosen the Colibre icons.

Please have another look to see if the above allows you to reproduce what I see. We want to encourage people to use Mint and Libre Office: having unusable icons out of the box creates unnecessary friction.

Let me know if I can provide more info to help you reproduce the issue.

Thanks!
