Description seatrout 2011-08-06 10:24:37 UTC
ODT files on my Windows 7 machines will not display in the Explorer preview pane if they were created with LO 3.4.2 but do display if created with 3.3

This is repeatable, every time, across two computers, one running W7 profesional, and one running W7 home. It is very irritating.

I poked around in the meta.xml files to see if anything had changed in the file format between 3.3 and 3.4. I couldn't see anything obvious. But something has clearly changed to break the preview mechanism.

Opening a file created under 3.3 and saving it out under 3.4.2 will break the previewing too, reliably.

I would file this in any list of really irritating bugs, because it makes file management really hard and irritating.

[This is an automated message.]
This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it
started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is
changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back
to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases.
Details on how to test the 3.5.0 beta1 can be found at:

I am having a similar problem with the 3.5 RC2 but it affects all doc types.

This was working fine on the 3.4.5 release.
Comment 3 Boostland 2012-02-05 15:41:50 UTC
Still broken in the 3.5 RC3

screen print from Win7 file manager with files from 3 LibreOffice versions

Hi,

I have created 3 files in LibreOffice versions in Linux, and pasted those in a folder and created a screen print of how it shows in WIn7 in my VirtualBox

They all look the same, and I can see a preview of the simple text in the file.
I have installed 3.4.2 on that Win7 box (and 3.5.0... in parallel)

Note that the explorer preview cache was cleared so no cached thumbnails were shown.

I have another system that was running OpenOffice in parallel with 3.3.4, I had installed the OO windows explorer extension and did not install the non working LO 3.3.4 windows explorer extension, with that set up preview thumbnails work fine.

If you have multiple versions of LO installed installing multiple windows explorer extensions might change it's behavior depending on the install order.
Comment 9 Pedro 2012-02-08 15:39:21 UTC
I can confirm this is a regression against 3.4.5

Tested on LibreOffice 3.5.0rc3 under Win XP x86 SP3
Comment 10 Björn Michaelsen 2012-03-01 09:08:38 UTC
Regression does appear in oldest version of bibisect-3.5.tar.lzma and must be older.
Comment 11 Boostland 2012-03-05 16:59:06 UTC
This bug is still present in the 3.5.1 rc1
Comment 12 Michael Stahl (allotropia) 2012-03-07 04:31:16 UTC
it looks like the code for this explorer extension is in shell/source/win32,
and it's custom stuff that doesn't use OOo libraries.

so this would need somebody to debug on Windows.

(and i wonder how Bjoern managed to bibisect it :-P )
Comment 13 Andras Timar 2012-03-12 01:24:23 UTC
I don't see this bug in 3.5.1 rc2. In fact I think I've fixed it with bug 46167.
Comment 14 Andras Timar 2012-03-12 01:30:53 UTC
I was wrong. Only thumbnail image works well with 3.5.1 rc2, preview is not available.
Comment 15 Boostland 2012-03-13 16:52:40 UTC
Bug still present in 3.5.1 RC2

It appears to be fixed in the 3.4.6 RC1

Explorer Preview and Icon thumb also broken in 3.5.2rc1
Comment 17 ydutrieux 2012-03-29 23:43:17 UTC
I can confirm this bug with 3.5.1 and it's linked to the saved version of document (1.0/1.1 version works), 1.2 and 1.2 extended format doesn't work.

to reproduce:
- open a document and type some text.
- Change the option of recording format : to odf 1.O/1.1
- Save the document
- preview works.

With 1.2 or 1.2 extended, preview doesn't work.
Comment 18 Andras Timar 2012-03-30 00:04:36 UTC
Explorer preview never worked, and in fact IMHO it is not implemented. Don't you have by any chance MS Office 2010 installed? You may see shell extension of MS Office 2010, that has the Explorer preview for ODF files.
Comment 19 Andras Timar 2012-04-14 15:42:35 UTC
So, I think I can close this bug. MS Office does not handle ODF 1.2, that's why you cannot see the preview. LibreOffice does not have a working preview shell extension.
Comment 20 seatrout 2012-04-18 08:29:38 UTC
So the workaround is to get LO to save in the earlier ODF format?
Comment 21 Petr Mladek 2012-04-19 01:25:42 UTC
Yes, you might export ODF 1.0/1.1 but then you might loss some information that is supported only by ODF 1.2, see http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/3.5#ODF_1.2_Conforming_Documents
Comment 22 Boostland 2012-05-17 17:31:41 UTC
The Windows Explorer Icon Thumbnail Preview is broken in 3.5.3.2 it works fine in 3.4.6

Something has happened to stop it as I can remove 3.5.3.2 and put 3.4.6 on and the icon thumbs work correctly, if I then remove 3.4.6 and put 3.5.3.2 back on and refresh the icon cache they go back to the default icon.

Maybe this belongs in another bug report about this problem
