While working on a large *.doc document (> 250 pages), I turned off the Status Bar in the View menu. After saving the document (Ctrl + S), the Status Bar reappears. The problem appears only in large .*doc documents - it is not present in shorter *doc documents and in *odt.

Confirmed with: LO 3.5.5.3 Build ID: own W7 debug build Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit Status bar is always reenabled after saving as doc file (x, xx and xxx pages). Stays hidden when saved as odt or docx.
