Description Rupert Parsons 2012-01-24 10:13:35 UTC
Problem description:

When trying to erase a protected cell no warning message is displayed: Protected cells cannot be modified"

Steps to reproduce:
1. Enter a value in a spreadsheet cell
2. Make sure the spreadsheet cell is protected
3. Protect the worksheet
4. Select the spreadheet cell containing the value
5. Attempt to erase the value using the your keyboard "delete" button

Current behavior:

No warning message is displayed that protected cells cannot be modified. (Note that if you attempt to overwrite the cell value a warning message is displayed)

Expected behavior:

A warning message should be displayed if the user attempts to delete contents of a protected cell.

Platform (if different from the browser):

Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:9.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0.1

Thanks for bugreport
It is done intendedly that Del produces no messages. Use Backspace if messages needed.
Use Tools->Customize to change this assignment

Many thanks for your message. Although not a bug I think the default behaviour of LibreOffice should be changed show a message when a user tries to delete a protected cell. It makes it clear to the user that the cell is protected.(In reply to comment #1)

This was a valid request, to show message "Protected Cells Cannot be Modified" also for Del (as for Backspace).
It's closed as a duplicate but Bug 43087 is messy and hard to follow. So I'll revert.

It was written that Del intentionally produces no messages but it was not explained and it's doubtful. It's true Delete key deletes the contents without a dialog, unlike Backspace. And that's opposite to OO, so version is LO 3.3. But this bug is about an error and it's response.

My view is that Delete should produce the same error. But I'd suggest to add an option for that message in Tools-Options-Calc-General-Input-Show warning when deleting protected cells with Delete key.
