When you select text in MS Office, a mini toolbar[1] appears which allows you to change the formatting of the selected text. LibO should provide a similiar toolbar. With MS Office's ribbon/tabbed UI, it is important to have easy access to the text formatting tools when you could be on a different tab of the ribbon and would always have to switch back to the Home tab to get that access. This doesnt happen in LibreOffice because the formatting toolbars never hide in the toolbar or the sidebar.
