Description Ivan Stephen 2013-06-27 16:57:05 UTC
Problem description:
Spreadsheets in particular are frequently giving me the "spinning beachball" on my Mac. I have lots of RAM, but have been trying to speed up the extremely slow saving process. I'll likely move a large spreadsheet to Filemaker, and avoid using LibreOffice for larger files.

I'm seriously thinking that I'd like to use something else, but can't find anything else.

Steps to reproduce:
1. ....
2. ....
3. ....

Current behavior:
It gives the spinning beachball, even when I'm in a very small spreadsheet.

Expected behavior:

Operating System: Mac OS X
Version: 4.0.4.2 release
Comment 1 Jorendc 2013-06-27 21:17:31 UTC
Hi Ivan,

I can not reproduce your mentioned behavior, but I have to be honest and say that I'm not that extensive Calc user myself. Tested using Mac OSX 10.8.4

@Ivan:
1) Does an user profile reset help? (guide: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#Resetting_the_user_profile)

2) If still reproducible, is it possible to attach a sample spreadsheet you have these lags?

3) Can you still reproduce this using 4.1.0 RC1 version (download here: http://www.libreoffice.org/download/pre-releases/). I notice some speed improvements using this version, so might work for you too.

Kind regards,
Joren

PS: what version of Mac OSX do you use?
Comment 2 Ivan Stephen 2013-06-27 21:45:18 UTC
Hi Joren,

I'm on OS 1.7.5. I no longer have the latest tiny spreadsheet that was open when the problem occurred yet again today, as it was gone when I recovered the open files. One of my concerns is that one file is fairly large, but not enormous by spreadsheet standards (with few numbers, no macros, etc.) - and is very slow to open and save.

I really don't want to keep downloading new versions of LibreOffice, if there is no advantage to them, or if I'll have new problems. Are you saying that the 4.1.0 RC1 version is better than 4.0.4.2 (which I thought was the most recent non-beta
version)?

I'm having trouble making sense of the "user profile reset". I'd never even heard of this until now. As someone who struggles with technology, I find that I become very unproductive when having these problems. It would make the concept of a "productivity suite" somewhat laughable, if I weren't struggling financially as well.

It's suggested online that we should tinker with LibreOffice preferences for faster opening and saving. However - it also warns that "some of the changes may adversely affect RAM" (but doesn't say which changes!) That sort of ambiguity just causes difficulties.

Thanks for your help. As a non-techie, I try to "give back" in other ways.

Regards,

Ivan Stephen

Hi Ivan,

Tip: Please browse to this report (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66266) to comment on the bug. Please do not reply on the email you get. This creates a lot of noise :)

I am not saying it is better or stabler (it is a Release Candidate (between beta and official release)). The only reason why I suggested to test this version is because I'm experiencing some speed improvements :). We highly not recommend to use RC-versions or 'point zero' versions for important documents etc etc.

Okay. Maybe RAM can be a problem here. No need to be tech-savvy: go to LibreOffice > Preferences. Unfold 'LibreOffice' and click on 'Memory'. The default 'Number of steps' is 100 which requires after a while a 'big' piece of memory. What is the result if you decrease this value to about 30 or so? (Click on OK after it, restart LibreOffice and retest again).

Well, I have to thank you ;-)

Kind regards,

I'm the person who originally posted this bug. Many people have confirmed that it IS a bug, to not be able to copy a word or phrase into the find box.

Incidentally - I'm giving serious consideration to switching to Word. Calling this bug "invalid" is another reason to switch.
