Pasting this into StarCalc gives extra empty cells spanning increasingly several columns.

screenshot showing the weird result of copy-paste of an html table

Seems to be reproducible with Version: 4.2.0.0.beta2+ (Build ID: 9bb72868b846a7ba7e8f985a87e944fb760a0f10) under Ubuntu 13.10 x86-64.
I see nothing in the html source code which can explain this behavior. But I am not an html expert.

What I did to do my test:
1/ click on the attachment to open it in the web browser (Firefox for me)
2/ ctrl+A ctrl+C in the browser to select and copy all
3/ open a new spreadsheet
4/ click in A1 and press ctrl+V
==> I got what is shown in my screenshot

Urmas: is it the behavior you described?

Best regards. JBF
