Description Matt Price 2014-02-28 21:02:50 UTC
Problem description:
No formulas compute in calc.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open new spreadsheet
2. type '25' in a1
3. type '=a1+1' in a2

Current behavior:
A2 will display '###'

Selection A1:A2 and pasting into Word will give:

2500
2501

Pasting to command-line or Emacs gives:

2500
This name already exists.509

Expected behavior:

A2 will display '2501'

Operating System: Linux (Other)
Version: 4.2.1.1 release
Last worked in: 4.1.5.3 release

Hi Matt, thanks for reporting.

Usually a '###' is given by a too narrow column width to show data.
Have you tried making widen the column width?
Could you attach a sample file?

I see this behaviour on my machine, too. This renders calc useless, so it is defenitly not a medium bug.

But I don't know what the reason for this is. Last night I was working with calc without any problem. Right now I'm running a KUbuntu Update (13.10 -> 14.04) in the background. Not sure if this creates the problem.

I get the same behaviour when my Tools>Options>Language Settings>Languages>User Interface is set to "English (UK)". Setting to "English (USA)" allows calc to compute formulas again. The "Locale" setting doesn't matter, and it doesn't matter what keyboard layout is set.

I wonder if the other reporters are also using non-USA user interfaces?

Possible work around:
1. Set Tools>Options>Language Settings>Languages>User Interface is set to "English (USA)"
2. Close calc. Do not save the file.
3. Re-open calc. Do the formulas work now?

The three ### mentioned by the other commenters is because the cell width is not wide enough to display the text "This name already exists.508". Calc seems to be replacing the open brackets with "IFNA" and the close brackets by "CHOOSE"
