Description A (Andy) 2014-03-28 17:41:25 UTC
Problem Description:
In WRITER you have the possibility to select a language from the menu TOOLS, but in CALC you unfortunately don't have this option.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open WRITER
2. Go to TOOLS -> LANGUAGE

Observation: You have the option to select the language for "For Selection", "For Paragraph" and "For all Text".

3. Open CALC
4. Go to TOOLS -> LANGUAGE

Observation: You have don't have an option to select a language. Hence, it would be good to have here also the option to select a language like "For Selection", "For the Whole Sheet" and "For all Sheets".

Operating System: Windows 8
Version: 4.2.2.1 release

Hi Andy,
language selection in calc is made through cell style.
It's possible to choose the language in [Ctrl+1] Menu/Format/Cell - Numbers tab for the cell format and Fonts tab for the cell language. And you can create a style for every language you like.

@m.a.riosv:
Thanks for your reply. I know this way, even if it has also still problems (see Bug 76714).
With my enhancement request I would like to further improve the UI by adding the possibility to also change the language with the menu TOOLS. I think this is important, more user-friendly, more consistent and intuitive, because if you are working with WRITER and then switch to CALC you will look vainly for the language option in the TOOLS menu. For a user it is not intuitive, that in CALC changing the language is different to WRITER.

Sounds good to me -> NEW.

Checked that those options are not available yet: LibO 4.4 RC1 on Win 8.1 32-bit.

Still relevant in:

Version: 24.2.0.0.alpha0+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 7d357628d6e8ce3f9e3c3a567ada21f02bce8d42
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

We currently only have "For all text" in that submenu.
OOo 3.3 had no option to change language for anything in that menu.

Unsure about sheet-level. A sheet direction can be changed from the Sheet menu, but don't know about single-sheet language.
Often, users are told to deal with cell styles to change the language for document parts, but I understand users would want a small range or a specific sheet to have a different language on a one-off basis.

Hossein, wondering if this could be some kind of easyHack, at least for the cell selection as it's only a shortcut to the Cell Format dialog's Font tab?

Bug 127856 summarizes
* picking a language [in the status bar] should change the cell section's text language
* clicking "More..." should always lead to the Font tab in the Format Cells dialog

We currently change the language for the whole document resp. "For All Text". To merge the requests I'd say you have to select the sheet in order to set the language on all cells - if the per cell patch is done. => DUP

No objection to the DUP, let's do it.
