Description klsu 2014-11-12 01:38:26 UTC
This is simple to reproduce. I have a multiple row & column range of cells that include references to cells in column E, and realized that all references to column E should be fixed rather than relative, so I selected the range of cells I wanted changed, pressed Ctrl+h, entered "(E" (w/o quotes) in the "Search for" field, and "($E" (w/o quotes) in the "Replace with" field, and clicked "Replace All". The intent would be to also replace all occurrences of ",E" and "-E" with ",$E" and "-$E", respectively, but when I try, nothing happens and just searching for "(E" in formulas returns "not found".

Oddly enough, replacing "E" with "$E" works fine, but that gives no way to specifically avoid replacing "e" with "$E" in a regular word or "EE" with "$E$E" in a cell reference.

As of yesterday, the latest was 4.3.3.2, so that's what I downloaded and installed, but the bug report selection pull-down for Version does not show 4.3.3.2.

MS made using Office less efficient by adding eye candy ("ribbons"), so people who wouldn't have much use for most of Office would find it easier to use the very few features they'll ever use of the very many there are. However, the switch to LibreOffice has been very disappointing. The only bugs I know of in Excel have been there since Excel 5 and were still there last I checked, but they relate to something most people don't use. I can't use LibreOffice Calc to create new sheets without finding something that doesn't work properly, but when I reported a recalculation problem, someone commented that it works using Shift-F9, when LibreOffice should do (and Excel does) it automatically. (Recalculate still doesn't work properly in 4.3.3.2, in other ways, but I can't get anything done if I spend all my time reporting bugs.) When I reported a SUMIF problem, someone commented that it works in a later version, so I guess there's little point in submitting a bug report on anything that isn't the latest release. But since LibreOffice doesn't tell me when it's out-of-date, I didn't have that version. Expecting the user to first check for updates every time he/she wants to use LibreOffice is not user friendly. Eventually, I'll get around to checking my bug reports for the older version, but I have some things I need to get done.

Hi @klau, thanks for reporting.

Please verify that you haven't marked in Other options, regular expressions. If so, then you need precede the special characters for regular expressions like $ or ( ) with a backslash \$ \( \).

You can find more help searching in the help for regular expressions, on how to use it and see what are the special characters, they are very powerful.

About calculations, there are two types, [F9] does calculation for cells with precedents modified, [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[F9] does a complete recalculation, solving some issues when some calculation it's not redone at their time. I think there is some development to avoid the second combination, but seems to me not in a short time.

You might as well cancel this bug report. Your response (thank you) collided with my submission of this update comment, so here it is again: I tried the replace again after a half hour of doing other things, and it worked (without changing any options in the replace dialog). So whatever caused the problem, it's not reliably reproducible. Next time, I'll wait a while and try again before I submit a bug report.
