Description Glenys Waters 2014-11-24 04:32:47 UTC
I am a heavy user of Draw and occasional user of Libre Impress and have been so for several years now. I have had the problem of images randomly disappearing from slides in files that I create in both programs for many years and its driving me nuts.
I'm currently using Libre Office 4.3.

The images I use are jpeg or png and possibly other formats.

The problem could be related to the number of images I use in a file as the behaviour is most noticeable when I have large numbers of slides (40 or 50) in a file.

When images disappear, I've not changed the location of the documents or the original images between closing and opening files.

I get the same behaviour when the document hasn't been closed. It can happen when I navigate away from a slide and then later return to it. It can happen with more than one image at a time or only one.

When the image is gone and I reinsert it, it can also disappear again.

One day a few months ago I lost a whole day's work on a presentation I was preparing in Libre Impress, so I gave up and went back to using PowerPoint.

I've been battling this bug for years and it is driving me back to using Microsoft products when I would really prefer to stay with Libre Office. Please can you fix it????

(Relevant: Bug 47148 - image caching / management is utterly shambolic)

So in your case we're not even exercising the file-save code.
(Although that might not be strictly true if there's auto-saving involved...)

It's hard to determine how to reproduce this problem as it happens randomly. Do you have (or could you create) a test file that might demonstrate the problem?

Could the options in Menu/Tools//Graphics cache, helps in someway?. Maximum memory is 256 aprox 64 images of 4 MB.

This memory limit has been unblocked for master and 4.4.0 daily builds.

Since there's a dup, putting this one to NEW.

bureautiquelibre: could you give a try to what Mario indicated in comment 2, see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86649#c2 ?

Reporter answered opening another issue. Quote from bug 86758:

A few days ago I reported a bug about illustrations randomly disappearing from Draw and Impress files. I have had two responses to the emails - Robinson Tryon(qubit) and m.a.riosv. My replies to both responses came back undeliverable.

One response asked for a file demonstrating the problem. It can be picked up at dropbox:

Hi Glenys,

1) Thanks for the file! Because it's too big for the current upload limits, could you please upload it to the TDF Wiki (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Main_Page) and provide a link to the page here? (That helps us to keep track of this bug over time)

2) Is there a particular set of steps or actions to perform with the file that are more likely to reproduce the problem? (e.g. "Open the file, move the red element, wait 2 minutes, etc.., etc..)

Thanks,

This problem has been reported in the Spanish ML.

"""
I have the problem that the images pasted in Draw are deleted, it happens when I open 3 or 4 pages, when I open the 4th eg. images of the 3 above are erased.

Something similar happens in Impress, if I have a presentation and when I open a 3rd or 4th slide, previous images are erased. In both cases about pasted images directly from internet as well as those of local folders, eg. the "Pictures" folder. Using Manajaro in KDE and XFCE and having the same, I have not tried other distros. LibreOffice version I use is libreoffice-common-4.2.5-1-x86_64 worth mentioning that this does NOT about writer.

A workaround that I use and it has worked for me is to save the file when I'm still on the first page, then'm saving changes as I create new pages with images.

Hi Robinson,
sorry for the delay. I'm not confident with the bug report system and use of wiki's etc so its taking time to work things out. I now think I know what I have to do to upload a file to the Wiki (click Upload) but when I do that and try to log in, it is not accepting the account name and password that I have just successfully used to create an account. So I'll try again tomorrow. If I should be doing something different to this then let me know please.
regards,
Glenys

It might be easiest to log-in first:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin

Then go to the File Upload page:

Mario: Could you get that reporter to upload an example file as well? Given the sporadic nature of this bug, I think we're going to need all the data we can get.

Hi Robinson, I tried logging in first but it wont accept my account that I created last night - possibly because I've been using an @ sign in it. will try again!!! groan... hopefully I'll sort it some time.

Hi, I made an account successfully and succeeded in logging in. I think I uploaded the file. It is:

Pidgin_ABD.odg ‎(file size: 11.53 MB, MIME type: application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.graphics)

Summary[edit]

Libre draw file for bug report 86649 supplied by Glenys Waters literacyglenys@gmail.com for Robinson Tryon.

Hope you can find it. I'm not sure how to link it for you.

I'll write more tomorrow as to things I've noticed about when pictures drop out
cheers,
Glenys

Hi Robinson,
sounds like you found the file. great.

I also increased the cache settings given the advice of Mario and vaguely remembering that the IT guy at work did something similar for me many years ago on another computer in another version of Libre. So the settings I've got now are: 256MB, 4.0MB,6.10hrs, 1024 objects (maximum allowed) and things seem to have settled down on several of my files. Before I had at least been able to keep them there and quickly make a pdf to print from, but this time I couldn't keep them there long enough to do the pdf.

I tried the suggestion of saving every page and that didn't make a difference.

I think it is connected to the number of objects I have in the file, probably way more than the programmers envisaged. so it might be the no of objects allowed figure needs to be higher than what the program comes with. It could also be linked to the length of time before something is 'removed from memory'

I tend to use graphics that are quite small in the longer books - average of 150KB. On impress if I use photos I usually if not always compress them to document setting, rather than photo. so I don't think it is the individual graphic size.

I appreciate your patience and help. Hope the above comments give ideas of what might be needed.
regards,
Glenys.

Hmmmm... definitely suspicious behavior with caching. Perhaps we'll get some more traction with increased attention being paid to bug 47148.

Internals of Impress and Draw are mostly the same. So I do set this as a
duplicate. When 46447 is fixed, pls keep an eye on this.
thanks,
Cor
