The comment boxes (yellow, in the right margins) are far larger than necessary. They start at three lines tall, even if there's nothing in them, and they have author/date information at the bottom, stacked on top of each other (so as to take up even more space). When producing PDFs, rather than sending the ODT back to someone, the size of the boxes limits how many comments one can make. Instead, the boxes should start at just one line tall, get bigger *if* you put in more than one line, and the author/date info should be optional (i.e., give me a way to turn it off).

Adding needsUXEval to clarify that the request is still valid.
There are many requests around comments, in particular when a document has many annotations. One idea is to make it pop-up like in Calc (bug 101714) and of course we could start with less lines and an option to show/hide authorship. I would do the latter per checkbox indented under Comments at Tools > Options > Writer > View. And quick access to this option in the context menu at the comments maybe too. Adding the request about comment width to see also field.

Created attachment 166572 [details] Comment tweak proposal This should be dealt with ASAP given that it majorly lowers the practical application of Writer. Comments become all but unusable with normal use (i.e. lots of comments per page). I do not think that the date or the author name should be hidden but I propose to put them both into the same row to conserve space - as per my attachment.

Please do not convert notes to popups! Doing so makes them nearly useless. They are not default visible—you have to click them—and they can’t be printed, either on paper or a PDF. This doesn’t require a complete redesign. Just make them smaller.
