I would like to see clearly when Caps Lock/Shift Lock is turned on in the LibreOffice interface. This improves user experience.
how should the Caps Lock status be displayed in the UI? could you provide a mockup?

In the status bar, as in Word? I think it should be an icon instead of text, it would take less space.

(In reply to tommy27 from comment #1) > how should the Caps Lock status be displayed in the UI? > could you provide a mockup? I don't care how it's implemented. Just somewhere where it's visible so you can keep a look at it while writing text. :)
I dont think this is a needed feature or should we also add status for when numlock is pressed. I find it silly that currently have a statusbar entry for insert, as we already have a different cursor used when we are in insert mode. I dont see any status bar entry in Word for capslock. Can you advise were you see this.
Created attachment 112135 [details] screenshot showing that word 2007 has the capslock indicator in status bar
Just for your information, MS Word 2007 does have a caps-lock indicator but its not visible by default. I have no idea if other versions have this feature. To get the Caps Lock indicator visible do the following: 1.Right-Click the status bar. 2.Click on Caps Lock in the list. Now when your Caps Lock is ON the word "Caps Lock" will appear. I personally do not think this is an important issue because there is alot of ways to have indicators either in the keyboard physically or through the Operating System. But I do not think its bad either, so if it can be done why not?

At least an option to show the current state is desirable. For Insert, I agree with you that's not really useful :) In fact, I don't even like Insert and when I use it, it's by accident and I turn it off immediately.

Thanks Ibrahim and Adolfo for pointing out that Word has it as an option. (In reply to Geoffrey from comment #9) > Not all people immediately see Caps Lock is on, for example on a laptop the > LED light for Caps Lock might be absent or easily overlooked. Most people can identify that caps lock is on when they type, as all the letters would be in capital letters. > At least an option to show the current state is desirable. If it possible to allow the customization of the statusbar, like in Word, so that users who want it added can enable it, that seems like a good thing.

So lets expand this a bit -- currently we have Insert/Overwrite mode in status bar--but we need a Caps Lock and also a Number Lock indicator. The current space in the status bar used for "Insert/Overwrite" mode is labeled with text, that space could be used for three icons perhaps with a localized single character label. Red or green "dots" with a single character (localized) label C: Red off/Green locked on -> for capslock I: Red off/Green locked on -> for insert N: Red off/Green locked on -> for numlock Or maybe just amber "dot"s for each when any is toggled active. The space could be active to toggle mode as it is now for insert/overwrite--or it could be a simple status indicator.
(In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #13) > Red or green "dots" with a single character (localized) label My keyboard has red LEDs for those states. And on means active. I don't think its a good idea. A short abbreviation is better here. CAP, NUM, INS always visible but disabled when inactive.

We're replacing our use of the 'ux-advise' component with a keyword: Component -> LibreOffice Add Keyword: needsUXEval [NinjaEdit]
Removing needsUX as this request makes much sense. Ideally we make it configurable (not all users need this info in the cluttered statusbar), so it depends on bug 92406. It could be an interesting easyhack.
A polite ping, still working on this bug?
I think we can assume he is not working on this any more by now..
