Description Valter Mura 2015-04-10 18:09:47 UTC
I would like to see a command (button) to easily delete all the files showed in the Start Center.
This could be useful if you need to clear quickly the screen. Of course, a confirmation dialog should appear before the deletion... :)

UX team, please take a look. Good enhancement I think..

This functionality exists already. Look at the File > Recent Documents menu; the Clear command will clear the Start Center thumbnails.

Also, I disagree that a confirmation dialog should appear, as clearing the list of recent documents does not delete any files, so there is no risk of data loss.

Thank you for the explanation, my fault that I didn't realize that the option already existed.

But... my request is for a "button" inside the Start Center area and not in the menu.

Concerning the confirmation dialog, I know these are only links, but I would like to have the confirmation anyway, something like:
"You are going to delete all the links to the documents contained in the Start Center area. Do you really want to delete them? The originals will remain untouched."

Just to be sure one is doing the appropriate action. :)

Is the menu so hard to find, then, so that the option guarantees duplication in another place in the UI? Also, is the command so frequently needed?

The action is non-destructive, therefore adding an alert would be more of an annoyance. (And why would you be unsure of doing the “appropriate action”? Isn’t it obvious what “Clear List” means…?) It’s a good practice to *reduce* the number of alerts presented to the user. Also, I don’t think it guarantees the additional translation work for something that is not used so frequently.

as Adolfo correctly pointed out we already have the "File/Recent Documents/Clear List" menu item.

however I agree with Valter that this option should be "more visible" in the Start Center itself rather that in that file menu only

I see two potential solutions:

1- put a black triangle on the right of the "Recent Files" button that opens a dropdown menu with the same items you have in the menu, including "Clear List"

2- allow right clicking in the empty space of the thumbnails panel to show a "Clear List" menu item

my preferred solution would be number 1.

I often find myself in the situation of clearing the list and it would be much more intuitive and user friendly to do that from a Recent Files dropdown menu or from a right click menu rather than in the File menu.

I agree with Adolfo that a confirmation of the clear list is unnecessary and would probably be only irritating

I set status to NEW and put this on "ux-advise"

I also edit the summary notes...the current "File deletion in the Start Center" which is too generic and incorrect (we are not deleting files, but just clearing their thumbs from the list) and I think a better description would be: "Start Center: Clear List item should more accessible"

I agree with Tommaso for option #1, but also, as option #3:

what about a button immediately after the Templates Folder or in the bottom of the left side bar (on top of the help and extension buttons)?

I'm not a programmer, so I do not know how much time is needed to create it, with the same command as the File one.

+1 -- to not providing confirm dialog -- that's silly, we don't do it now for the individual thumbnail views nor for the existing File -> Recent Documents -> Clear List--why would we add it for clearing them all from the Start Center thumbnail views.

+1 -- to adding a GUI dropdown menu "Triangle" to the SC Recent Files. Simply reuse the Clear List .UNO command from the Menu, end of story. Of course, the drop down menu needs to be aligned under the triangle to match needed fix for bug 92499
