Spelling check (F7) fails to detect misspelled words. English, US, Writer, Version: 4.4.3.2, Build ID: 4.4.3.2 Arch Linux build-2, Build ID: 4.4.3.2 Arch Linux build-2. Dictionaries: en-US, technical[all],standard [all],IgnoreAllList[all]
Is hunspell properly installed? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LibreOffice#Spell_checking
Created attachment 117333 [details] Spell Check does not work. I like LibreOffice Writer, but I have NEVER had success with the spellchecker (even going back to OpenOffice). As you can see in the attachment: the last word - "inheiritt" is (deliberately) spelled wrong. The Text Language field is blank!? Under 'Options - Language Settings -Languages' the (Western)DEFAULT - ENGLISH(New Zealand) is chosen. Under 'Options - Language Settings -Writing Aids > Available language modules:' I have checked: Hunspell SpellChecker; Libhyphen Hyphenator; & OpenOffice.org New Thesaurus. User-defined dictionaries: I have checked: technical [All]; IgnoreAllList [All]; & standard [All]. Options: I have checked: 'Check spelling as you type'; 'Check grammar as you type'; 'Check special regions'; & 'Hyphenate special regions'.
(see Comment 2 below) Whenever I do a spellcheck, from 'F7' key or from the icon, or from the menu, a box appears over the 'Spelling' window asking if it should start from the beginning of the document? If I click 'No' - the 'Spelling' window disappears; if I click 'Yes', the 'LibreOffice 4.3.3.2 box "The spellcheck is complete." ' message appears - as in the attachment, without checking any words! This is extremely annoying & must affect everyone who uses it? My spelling is not good & I need a working spellchecker. I got this version: 4.3.3.2 Build ID: 430m0(Build 2) as a default OFFICE item in Linux - Debian 8 (jessie)...but as I said - spellcheck has NEVER worked for me since Open office...same problem, every time I have changed computer hardware &/or Operating Systems - (I had the same problem when I used to use Windows XP). If there is a simple fix for this problem then it needs to be PROMINENTLY found in HELP! If not then you need to fix this fault quickly & permanently. I was writing an important letter to a friend of mine, when the spelling error came up. I SHOULD have just got up & searched the dictionary for the correct spelling....but this is like the 'final straw'. If this problem does not get fixed in a timely manner, then I will stop recommending others to use Libre Office. Thank you for your attention - Bruce Gilbert.
Bruce: there doesn't seem to be a hunspell en-nz package available for Debian. I believe this is the cause of your problem. https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=hunspell What hunspell packages do you have installed? en-us? Does it work for text marked as American English? These are not global problems, so you shouldn't stop recommending LibreOffice just because of these. These are isolated cases related to the system and its packages.
Turns out that both hunspell and hunspell-en are required for spell check to work with English-US. This was missed if present in requirements at time of installation, but it is in the archlinux wiki at this time.
