Description Robert Akin 2015-09-28 15:02:26 UTC
I am using LibreOffice Version 4.4.5.2., Build a22f674fd25a3b6f45bdebf25400ed2adff0ff99

I have an application whereby I need to copy two cells (cols. B & C) from a Row (say Row 2) and then paste them into two other cells (Cols. I & J) of another row (say Row 3), and then copy cells from Cols. B & C of Row 3 and paste them to Cols. I & J of Row 2. I repeat this criss-crossed copy and paste operation down the spreadsheet for subsequent pairs of rows: 2&3, 4&5, 6&7, etc.

The specific operation I use is to drag the cursor across the cells in Cols B & C with the mouse to select them, and then I do a Ctrl C. I then mouse over to Cols I & J in the other row and drag the cursor across them to select them, and do a Ctrl V. I can do this very quickly as I move down the page.

During these operations, LibreOffice Calc hangs up and I have to use the Windows Task Manager to kill LibreOffice in order to go on. At first I thought it had to do with my performing these operations during a "Save" operation, this seems not to be the case as I have set the interval for saves to be a large number and the hang up continues to occur. I have turned off auto-correct and spell checker and the hang ups continue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can not confirm with 5.0.2.2 (x64), win7.

For the test, could you rename your LibreOffice directory profile (see https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile) and give it a new try? Thank you
Comment 2 Robert Akin 2015-10-01 21:09:54 UTC
Thanks for your interest. As suggested in the document you referred me to, I changed the file named "user" in the user profile directory stream to "user-old" and then restarted LibreOffice Calc. I opened the spreadsheet I have been working on and started performing my copy and paste operations. The program hung up again after about 4 or 5 copy/paste operations. So, a new user profile did not fix this problem.

Another piece of information is that once it hangs up and I use the Windows Task Manager to kill the program and then restart LibreOffice and select the Calc spreadsheet and resume my Copy/Paste operations, the program will not hang up again. So the problem seems to be only on the initial load of LibreOffice. ????

We might need an example file where this happens. Or does it happen with any file? Pure text or numbers? Even empty cells?
You might want to test LibO 5.0.2.

Set to NEEDINFO.
Change back to UNCONFIRMED after you have provided more information.

Spreadsheet causing hangups doing copy and paste operations.

See dialogue on this bug.
Comment 6 Robert Akin 2015-10-02 18:34:13 UTC
I took the following operations:
I uninstalled LibreOffice 4.4.5.2 and then restarted my computer. I then downloaded and installed LibreOffice 5.0.2 and again restarted my computer. I opened the attached file and began my copy/paste operations. The program hung on the second paste. Installing 5.0.2 did not prevent the hangups.

As you can see from the spreadsheet attached, the copy/paste operations are simple text (people's names). I do not know if the hangups would happen with numbers.

I have used various versions of Calc quite a bit and have never experienced this problem with any other file.

Please ignore my comment about not having this problem show up on any other spreadsheet. Upon further reflection, I realized that I have performed these copy/paste operations on two spreadsheets, and the hangups occurred on both. Sorry for the confusion.

I performed several copy & paste operations like in the description. Nothing bad happened.

Please close this trouble ticket. I will just live with the error that keeps occurring with this spreadsheet. Evidently it has something to do with my particular installation since it cannot be reproduced.
Comment 11 Buovjaga 2015-10-06 05:16:01 UTC
Ok, I think invalid is more fitting in this case.
Comment 12 Robert Akin 2015-10-07 15:47:18 UTC
I do not think that "Invalid" is the correct label for this bug. It implies that the bug did not exist or that my reporting it was not a valid bug report; however, I am still experiencing the problem every time I boot my computer, load the spreadsheet and begin the cut/paste operations - usually after the first 4 or 5 operations. Fortunately, after using the Windows Taskmaster to kill LibreOffice and reloading it, the spreadsheet is recovered, and I can then perform the operations without any more problems. So, I can work with this, but you should know that the error is still there even though you cannot reproduce it.
Comment 13 Buovjaga 2015-10-07 16:05:56 UTC
Ok, let's set to unconfirmed then.
Comment 14 Robert Akin 2015-10-14 15:27:11 UTC
In working with this error, I have some additional information. This LibreOffice Calc hangup ONLY occurs when I do the aforementioned copy/paste operations on the first load of LibreOffice following a reboot of Windows 7 on my computer. However, the hangup is consistent every time following a reboot. If I do multiple reloads of Calc without a reboot, the hangup NEVER happens. Similarly, if I put my computer into "Sleep" mode and then awaken it and load LibreOffice, the hangup does NOT ever occur. I have tried this many times and the above is consistent.

Please note that I have used Calc on numerous other spreadsheet applications not involving copy/paste operations and have not experienced this hangup. Nor have I had a similar hangup on any other applications on my Windows 7 laptop.

I hope that this additional information may be useful, but I expect that I have raised the complexity level of the problem suggesting that it is an interaction between Windows 7 reboot and LibreOffice Calc.

Tried it again as the first thing after opening LibreOffice, but could not reproduce.

Did you reboot the Windows 7 computer and then load LibreOffice Calc to try to duplicate the problem in this latest report?

Yes, exactly like that.

Hello, I've been looking into this issue too and can't reproduce it with neither

Windows 10 Pro, Version 1511 (OS Build 10586.36)
Version: 5.0.4.2 Build ID: 2b9802c1994aa0b7dc6079e128979269cf95bc78
Locale: de-DE (de_DE)

nor

Windows 7 Professional; Version 6.1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)
LibreOffice 3.3.0
OOO330m19 (Build:6)
tag libreoffice-3.3.0.4

Have you updated to 5.0.4+ in the meantime and does the problem with the files still persist? If it does, it would be very helpful if you could try and get a backtrace < see: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/How_to_get_a_backtrace_with_WinDbg > for our devs to analyze. Thank you for your patience.

I have recommended that the status of this bug be changed to RESOLVED. I bought a new Windows 10 computer and can no longer duplicate this problem. Evidently, the bug was limited to Windows 7 and/or my old laptop computer. Just to add to the mystery surrounding this bug, the reason I abandoned my old laptop is that it began to lock up at random times - usually not associated with LibreOffice. Note, however, that these later lock ups could not be reproduced like the LibreOffice bug lock up could. As a result, I do not know if the two lock up types are related or not. Nonetheless, I am no longer troubled with this problem and since you cannot reproduce it, I do not believe spending more time on it is justified. Thanks for trying to help me.
