Bug affects all LibO applications (write, draw, impress, etc.), at least on Linux, KDE. The 5.1 RC 1 LibO introduces a new insert image dialog wrt LibO 4. Unfortunately, this new dialog has broken functionality: - There is no preview pane - The preview ticbox at the bottom seems to do nothing - The preview button at the top activates thumbnail previews on the side of the filenames, but only a little fraction of file types can provide a preview, wrt the preview pane in LibO 4. For instance svgz files do not have any preview.
The bug is due to the use of system dialogues in place of LibO ones. If one selects 'use Libreoffice dialogs' in 'open/save dialogs', then the traditional interface is used that is fine. I think that at least the 'preview' tickbox should be removed from the insert image dialog when the system dialogs are used, unless they can provide a proper preview.
Confirmed. Ubuntu 15.10 64-bit Version: 5.2.0.0.alpha0+ Build ID: 4a8c0d313540bd78c9c381edd548b976c580ca9a CPU Threads: 2; OS Version: Linux 4.2; UI Render: default; TinderBox: Linux-rpm_deb-x86_64@70-TDF-dbg, Branch:master, Time: 2016-01-04_02:01:32 Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8)
From the bug title change, I understand that system dialogs have inherent limitations. I also suggest that if the system dialogs have significantly more limited functionality than the LibO provided ones, the LibO ones should be made the default, even if this slightly reduces the visual application consistency in the desktop environment. For instance, this is the case on Linux KDE, where the LibO dialogs can provide a large preview for all image types supported by LibO, while the system dialogs only support microscopic and IMHO useless thumbnails for just a restricted subset of the image types.

Issue still present as of 5.3.1 RC1. Setting options to use Libreoffice rather than system dialogs is a good workaround.

Seems to be OK now (even if I dislike the way in which KDE dialogs do the preview and I prefer the LibO dialogs).
Ok, let's close. There is also bug 115745 for removing the checkbox completely.
Sorry, please reopen or merge with other bug. I have just realized that I made the wrong test, using the file open rather than the image insert dialog.
Ok, I guess we can close this as a reference to 115745. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 115745 ***
