I have tested this in Safari 5.1.2, and it works as it should. However, the screen shot attached to this bug is from IE8. I have tested this in IE8 and I am able to replicate the bug. (Both browsers are running on Windows 7). I am therefore re-titling this bug to refer to IE8.

This is a very old report. If this problem is still valid for latest IE releases (as of 2013-05-30 that is IE 10.0.5) feel free to re-open this bug.
