Description Nikolai Lusan 2012-07-10 23:50:36 UTC
Currently Evolution Address Books are supported as sources, but only if they are local. It would be nice if we could use CardDav/WebDav address books as a source within Libreoffice. I don't know if this could be handled as an extension of the Evolution plugin, or if it would need to be handled as a separate module altogether. It would also be nice to use CardDav as a source for mail-merge.

Thanks

I would like to have carddav as an addressbook source in LibreOffice too.

Using Evolution is not a good way, e.g. because Evolution is only available for Linux. And you would need to install Evolution, even when you are using another programm for E-mail.

A native driver would be the best, maybe using a library like pyCardDAV.

Another way would be using ODBC or something like that. But so far I know there is no carddav driver for ODBC.

Since this seems to have been ignored by devs, I'd like to stress again how important it is to have CardDAV support in LibreOffice being the only cross-platform protocol/format for addresses.

I just want to second this. CardDAV is *the* open standard for contacts exchange. Libreoffice should definitely support it as an address book source.

As Workaround you can use the function datasource from thunderbird.
Thunderbird can use Caldav and Carddav. So you can use it indirectly.

Apparently I made this request so long ago I forgot it existed, and yes it obviously seems to have been ignored.

I don't like the idea of using thunderbird as a work around, it's not my MUA of choice (I don't like it's interface, threading ... and about 6 other things). Other work arounds could include exporting your caldav/cardav data into a postgres, sqlite, or mysql database - none of which fill me with excitement.

I think that supporting the standard for cross platform sharing or contact and calendar information is a better way to go. If I didn't have other projects on my plate - fixing SNI on postfix is higher on my list - then I would have a go at it myself, I just don't have the time.

Apologies for the 'bump' by adding myself to CC.

My use-case is to use NextCloud as my address-book data source, which should be feasible/useful enough to a number of users. I will see if I can raise the issue in other support channels, but I, too, have rather too many FOSS projects in the proverbial fire, and the learning curve to update LO code would likely be beyond my current abilities!
