Writer should be able to import picture as Pdf and Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files. Others are asking about this, see http://ask.libreoffice.org/question/3669/pdf-import-as-picture/
Is anyone on this feature request? Lots of people would like to see this implemented
No one caring about this?
I second this. Adobe Illustrator is widely used and an .ai import as vector graphic would be good. Here is some information on the file format: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Illustrator_Artwork. Old .ai files are based on EPS, which is supported by LibreOffice. New .ai files are based on PDF.
Importing PDF files as pictures (or vector graphic?) is a great idea, since it is a typical use case that people need to get images or graphics from a PDF to a presentation or document.
Inkscape seems to have two reasonable Adobe Illustrator import filters:
"Adobe Illustrator 9.0 and newer (*.ai)"
"Adobe Illustrator 8.0 and older (*.ai)"
Inkscape is GPL-licensed, so maybe some parts of the filters can be re-used for LibreOffice. Could they?
