Description Josh Braun 2013-07-16 19:15:56 UTC
Description of requested enhancement:

One of the things that I like about LibreOffice Writer is the ability to bind key combinations to a wide variety of behaviors. This makes it a good word processor for folks used to shortcut-intensive text editors like Emacs or vim. I personally have made extensive use of this feature and have keybindings for navigating and editing text documents almost exclusively from the keyboard.

When navigating via the keyboard, it's often useful to have the ability to keep the cursor vertically centered in the viewport—in other words to have the document view automatically scroll, such that the cursor always remains vertically centered in the window (in vim, this can be done with the 'scrolloff' option). Or, alternatively, it's nice to have a shortcut key that will re-center the viewport on your cursor at any time (in Emacs, Ctrl-l does this for you; Apple has also introduced this feature in Pages).

It would be nice to introduce one or both of the above options in LibreOffice Writer—i.e., either

(a) an option to keep the cursor always centered, which could be toggled under 'Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > General'; or

(b) the option to bind a key under 'Tools > Customize > Keyboard > Navigation' that will vertically center the cursor on demand within the window.

The ability to keep the cursor vertically centered within the text window at all times minimizes the need to use the mouse for scrolling and navigating a document and makes for a much simpler UX for users who navigate primarily from the keyboard.

Uau.. really sorry it has taken so long for anybody to look at this bug.

I think it is a valid request - at least variant "b" should not be hard to implement.

Adding needsUXEval to give the UX and design team work. :)

Please only keep the applicable meta bug or add a new applicable one after finding a decision.

We discussed this in the design meeting. It sounds like a lot of effort for a limited number of users. Some open questions remain:

+ what happens at document end? activate the direct cursor mode?
+ what on jump via Navigator
+ what if the position is occupied by an object?

LibreOffice is just not a text editor but an office suite. Perhaps the special solution is better done per extension. Feel free to reopen the request.
