Created attachment 94939 [details] xls file (scrubbed of other month pages, data, etc) showing the problem in A1 Problem description: I have a daily/monthly/annual expense file I have been using for many years, originally in Excel for windows, then in OpenOffice mac. It is in older xp-2003 compatible format. I just opened this file in LibreOffice and it loses its top row height formatting and cell orientation data. It all has gone to default. So I try to fix it. The top row (1) is 1" high, cell are .25" wide. This row has the header text rotated 90 deg + centered horizontally. Cell A1 is slightly different, in that in addition to that it has the date vertically stacked as this: J A N ' 1 4 Except in A1 I cannot get the text centered horizontally. That first cell stays off to the left of centered, even if I pick right? When I create a new file in LibreOffice the problem is only slightly there, the text is somewhat centered, but visually off to the left. >>> I attached the XLS file scrubbed of all data, extra sheets, numbers, identifiable information, ... so it is basically a blank month page with cell A1 acting up. Steps to reproduce: 1. Set Document font to Arial 8 2. Set row 1 height to 1" and column width to .25" 3. In A1 type JAN 2014 4. Format Cell 5. Number formatting date: MMM 'YY 6. Format cell 7. Center horizontally, Middle vertical alignment, Stacked. Current behavior: Centered text is off center to the left. Expected behavior: True centering. Regardless whether the file is an older XLS, as this file has been working fine cross platform in excel win and open office 3 and 4 for mac. Operating System: Mac OS X Version: 4.2.1.1 release

Highlighted the top left cell that is not aligned properly. Picked format cell to show what its settings are ... I have not looked into whether other versions or platforms experience the problem. I know that OO 3.x and 4 did not / do not have a problem with it.
Created attachment 94986 [details] Screenshot of new blank Calc file showing left of center centering L0 4.2 OSX 10.9.2 I also noticed the issue to a small extent in a brand new calc file, make a larger cell, center the text and you'll see that the characters don't quite line up with the A from the cell indication; nor the center of the character typed underneath. I used some pipe symbols to better show the difference. It would seem like they're all centered slightly different from each other. Not sure in the case with a new file if that has something to do with the font? But clearly in my submitted XLS file, under LO 4.2 MAC OS X 10.9.2 it is way off. Can't get A1 centered. Can't get A1 right aligned.
Hello icerabbit, Can you try in Format > Cells > Borders to set Spacing to contents to 0 pt and see if you get the correct alignment? Thank you, Jacques
Created attachment 94988 [details] Another screenshot of the issue, after spacing 0 0 0 0 Spacing 0 0 0 0 did not help. I did a test on D1 and it behaves as expected. Did a format paintbrush from D1 to A1 and it brought it to the center??? So, at least I found a solution to my alignment issue with this particular file. ( It is still off center slightly, like any centered cell in a new document I create )

I am unable to reproduce the issue under MacOS 10.6.8 using v4.3.0.3 Build ID: fcd3838c4097f7817b5b3984fd88a44e1edd8548 (x86). Main things to note: - Font in the example is set to "Arial1" (which does not exist). - Cell border spacing to content settings in the example are 2.0 pt all around. Changing these to Arial and 0 pt all around, along with the settings suggested in comment 1 gives the result in the attached. icerabbit please try a newer release and report if the problem persists.
