Description geoff 2014-03-27 10:52:10 UTC
I have used Open Office for well over a decade, but in the last few weeks have decided to Try Libre and OO side by side. I have a three page writer document which is a table of web development issues. This is shared with another via Google Drive. When the document is saved with OO as an ODT file it is 24 KB, but in Libre it is 58 KB. I have tried the save several times having made a very small change such as changing a 1 to a 2, but with no difference to the result. (If I save as a .doc file both Libre and OO are the same size (29 KB) so is an xml file the same size. Docx, which only Libre can save as is remarkably small at only 8 KB.)
Comment 1 Urmas 2014-03-27 12:01:17 UTC
And where are the documents?

@Urmas
please, do not change status to INVALID
there's a procedure which says that 6 months need to pass without any feedback from reporter before changing the status from NEEDINFO to INVALID
Comment 4 Robinson Tryon (qubit) 2014-08-17 03:21:30 UTC
Changing status back to NEEDINFO.

NOTE: This bug should stay in NEEDINFO status until OP (or someone else) provides documents showing the size differential.

Thanks,

I cannot provide any further information than I have already. It should be easy for you to recreate by going through the same procedure I have. Save an odt document that includes a table in Open Office. Then save the same document in Libre Office. Then you should see what I mean. The original document I am unwilling to release as it has confidential information. I also tried another document saving in LO and then in OO and that was exactly the same a larger size in LO. To be honest I have now ceased using Libre Office on a day to day basis due to this reverting to Open Office.

OpenOffice generates more low quality thumbnails. In LibreOffice we changed that at one point to a higher quality but unfortunately the file size of the thumbnail has considerably increased. In LO 4.4 I have made some optimizations (used PNG8, lower quality image scaler) and the thumbnail file size is now much smaller - about the same as in OpenOffice (sometimes less, sometimes more). but still the same dimensions and quality.

I tried some tests today on one document:
LO 4.3    - 36,9 kB (thumbnail 25,4 kB)
AOO 4.1.1 - 16,5 kB (thumbnail 5,1 kB)
LO 4.4    - 17,2 kB (thumbnail 5,7 kB)

You can also disable thumbnail creation. This is described in [1].

[1]: http://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/36746/is-there-any-way-to-disable-saving-thumbnails-in-odtods/

So the solution for you is to either disable the thumbnails or move to LO 4.4.
