Writer 4.2.5.2 from debian-wheezy backlports doesn't renders incorrectly formulas in this file on page two and in the text, replacing various characters with a purple question mark

I mean "doesn't render correctly".
Comment 2 Yousuf Philips (jay) (retired) 2014-07-31 06:57:55 UTC
Hello Hennadii,

Thank you for filing the bug. Can you please send a screenshot of the incorrect formula rendering on page 2 as i dont see any formulas on page 2.

Regarding the purple question marks, i didnt see any of these as well, so a screenshot of this would also be useful.

Hello Hennadii,

I was able to find the issues with the formulas and purple upside down question marks on pages 3 and 4. Confirmed on Linux Mint with 3.6.7, 4.1.6 and 4.3.1. It would crash for me on 4.2.5 but loaded fine on 4.2.7.

Yes, sorry, it was page 3, not two. You correctly identified what I meant. Anyway there's another screenshot in commnet #5.

Thank you.

This appears to be more an issue with importing formulae from .docx than a Writer problem. The question marks are an indication that there is an error in the formula syntax.

Taking for instance formula (3) from attachment 103592 [details], its formula source reads:

  {R} rsub {SA} = u {u} ^ {T} + cos {left (SA right ) ( } left ...

If this is instead changed to:

  {R} rsub {SA} = u {u} ^ {T} + cos {left (SA right ) } ( left ...

(with one "}" and ")" swapped) then the formula looks like the sample rendering from Word.

In fact, this seems to be a duplicate of bug 59181 - both involve confusion between straight and curly brackets in formulae, and import from .docx
