Description Samuel Mehrbrodt (allotropia) 2016-05-28 09:36:46 UTC
In Writer we currently have 10 heading levels which is quite much.
I suggest that we remove some.

Some numbers:
Google Docs: 3 levels
WPS Writer: 3 levels
MS Word: 9 levels

Hi Samuel,

Wasn't this needed for legal use?

What do you mean?

Another option would be to just hide some heading levels by default, not remove them.

That would at least clean the list in the sidebar a bit up.

They use up to <many> numbering levels.

As long as they can be used, that .looks fine for me.

(I think I remember Jay / Joel / .. looked at this before, by the way.)

Having more than 4 levels should be treated as a crime. We could have a setting under Tools > Options > Writer > View how many levels are shown by default.

Yes - this is even stated in article 1.4.5.2.5.8 in EU "Document abuse law"

Hm, I know many heading levels are bad writing style but some users e.g. public institutions will need that. The "All styles" sidebar style view is so long, it doesn't matter if there are 4 or 9 headings visible.

I'm not sure if it's good usability to create a new level of complexity by introducing an option setting that regulates the headings quantity. What's the logic behind that from a users point of view to change the style sidebar in the options dialog?

This looks like arbitrary decision. 4 seems not enough to me. I opt for 5. Even sizes and shortcuts are set for 5.

Serious: didn't I read a suggestion somewhere that the number of level rises in the use?
E.g. 4 by default, but once 4 is used, 5 becomes visible et cetera?

We talk about Automatic only- and the number of headings will always be somewhat arbitrary. Adding more headings dynamically sounds like too much effort for the minor annoyance. So let's better keep the current state.
