Looks like there is a decision about by default disable OpenCL for Calc.
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Disabling-of-OpenCL-by-default-in-Calc-tc4186719.html
http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Libreoffice-qa-minutes-of-ESC-call-tc4187634.html

After a lot of effort from a lot of people: having issues, reporting, doing triage, and developers solving them, now disable by default, seems a bit strange, but let's go.

On one hand, OpenCL it's really an important option with some less powerful computers like celerons, there is a great different working with spreadsheets that are a bit heavy.
On the other, IMO most of the users don't worry about review the options and test them, if we don't facilitate to take advantage of OpenCL, a lot of great work for nothing.

So a clear flag on the status bar, like 'OpenCL' in red if disable and green if enable, can brings more attention about it. With a clicking on it to change their status and ask for restart LibreOffice.

The average users Benjamin/Eve [1] doesn't know about OpenCL. It's an expert feature and either on or off, meaning the user will most likely not play with this option (unlike Adrian [1] in case OpenCL is buggy).

Showing the effective setting of such an expert option in the statusbar takes a lot of precious space with no benefit. And even a small icon wouldn't be actionable. My suggestion is to keep the option where it is (Tools > Options > General) and to show the status in the about dialog. Doing so also helps in case of bug reports when the system info is copied.

In the end the ESC considered to switch OpenCL off by default. But only if the issue(s) cannot tracked down. Ultimate goal is to keep it. The decison is postponed for the next meeting.

Agreed on that OpenCL status has no place in the status bar.

That is now implemented in both master and libreoffice-5-2: https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?id=adc3932dfc4fe763b7db0af8843b01614bdc6aa2
