Screenshot of the navigator and the formula editor.

In Writer, I ususally have the navigator (F5) open and docked on the left side of the window.
When I enter a mathematical formula (with Insert / Object / Formula) the Formula Elements are also visible in the same place.
You can't access them, because both layers (the Navigator and the Formula Elements) are on top of each other, and they "compete" each other.
If you "undock" the formula Elements, the Navigator vanishes. But it should already vanish, if you want enter the formula area.

Also on the right side, there is some shadow from the Properties window.
This worked well in the last version (5.0.6) and seems to be a new bug since 5.1.4
