Description cyberhuskey 2016-08-05 09:42:48 UTC
Hi there. My computer freezes and then crashes when I change a document in Writer into full screen mode. This happened with Win 10 and happens with Win 10 Anniversary edition.

Please provide details of your Windows build, your Graphics card and driver (run msinfo32.exe and look at the summary, and the components -> display panels).

Also, copy text from the LibreOffice main menu Help -> About LibreOffice so we know what build of LibreOffice you are having issues with.

Finally, if you see that LibreOffice is using OpenGL (the Renderer: string in that about dialog will be GL) please disable OpenGL rendering for LibreOffice from Tools -> Options -> View: checkbox "Use OpenGL for all rendering (on restart)". Uncheck and close relaunch LibreOffice.

Retest the full screen mode toggle-- <Ctrl>+<Shift>+j

Thanks.

Disabled OpenGL rendering and fullscreen works properly now. If you have a spare minute, could you please explain very briefly what the difference is between OpenGL enabled and disabled. Many thanks.

A computer has a Graphics Processing Unit that composes the what the operating system and individual programs render to the display.

The GPU can have some form of hardware acceleration to offload processing from the CPU. The OS and drivers for the GPU will negotiate the amount of off loading.

OpenGL rendering provides an additional application programming interface that the OS and running programs can use to accelerate rendering, making more use of a GPUs processing capabilities.

Without OpenGL, the OS and GPU can still use hardware acceleration just not to the full potential capacity of the GPU. And that hardware acceleration can be further limited and the OS under program control performs the rendering.

In LibreOffice modules that can make use of OpenGL are enabled with the Tools -> Options -> View controls. The downside is that if the OS / GPU / Driver implementation are not adequate to the task visual glitches of varying severity can occur.

On Windows OpenGL is enabled by default--if the GPU / Driver pairing passes a blacklist and simple functional check on launch. If marginal or blacklisted, OpenGL rendering is disabled for that user profile. Visual glitches that appear otherwise can be avoided by disabling OpenGL rendering.

On Linux OpenGL is disabled by default because there are just too many combinations of OS / CPU / GPU and drivers to reliably have it enabled. And, users on Linux seem to have fewer issues in enabling performance features for their OS / Desktop environment including use of OpenGL if they find it to be stable.

We're of course glad you've sorted things on your system. But we still need the details of OS / GPU / and Driver for the version of LibreOffice you had this issue with.

OP responded in PM... so looks to be a laptop with a discrete nVidia GPU and onboard Intel HD4600. Not clear if the system allows designation of which GPU handles a performance application. Could be LibreOffice is running on the Intel HD46000 and not the nVidia GPU.

What strikes me oddly is that I didn't have any problems with full screen mode in previous LO versions.
Comment 6 cyberhuskey 2016-08-05 23:14:05 UTC
Sorry, my last comment isn't quite right. I had same problem in May.
Comment 7 cyberhuskey 2016-08-07 02:06:28 UTC
I've just found recent driver updates for Intel and nVidia. OpenGL works now in LO. There's only one slight but: when trying to put in fullscreen mode, LO crashes the very first time after each computer booting, afterwards no problem.

Closing this issue WFM.

Please keep up with drivers and report any new and reproducible issues in new bug report with detailed steps to reproduce and include details of OS, Hardware and drivers.

I have got a similar problem with full screen mode with a notebook, which has an onboard "Interl(R) HD Graphics 630" and a "NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050 Ti" and Windows 10. There exists an automatic detection, which graphic card to use, so that the NVIDIA card is only used when needed, to reduce power usage. It seems, that this automatic detection does not work for OpenGL in LibreOffice.

The NVIDIA settings have an option to assign a graphic card to an application. If I set there, that NVIDIA is used for OpenGL in LibreOffice, then full screen mode works without problems.

[I have added this information here, because it might be useful for other users with similar problems.]
