Description CardTheEngineer 2016-10-30 08:42:08 UTC
Description:
In the equation editor, in either the LO:Math or LO:Writer, the plus signs are too bold, and skewed horizontally. This makes the plus signs POP out of equations, making them look ... off.

Also, I can't un-ital letters. I love having them ital by default, so please keep that. Sometimes in certain areas of physics and engineering (and maybe others) a non-ital variable represents something completely different than an ital variable, and right now I can't display the two different variables in the same equation.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Create Equation.
2.Type any variable (letter) & plus sign.
3.Notice how bold the plus sign is, and no un-ital letter option.

Actual Results:
Found the + sign to be stretched horizontally, and somewhat already bold. Almost no difference compared to an actual bold +.

There is no option to un-ital variables.

Expected Results:
A normal looking + sign.
An option to un-ital letters.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes. I also upgraded from 5.1.3 to 5.2.2.2, and used another computer.

Additional Info:
(It also appears the change method (font <?> { <?> }) doesn't work. But I don't care about this nearly as much about the overly large + and un-italing.)

Please, attach a screenshot for the plus sign.
For un-ital, do you mean an option or a command ? You can define the font used for variables in the menu Format > Fonts.

Set status to NEEDINFO, please set it back to UNCONFIRMED once requested
informations are provided.

Best regards. JBF

Couple Sample Equations Showing Plus Sign and Some Missalignment

TL:DR - Plus sign takes away focus from equation, Sum function not aligned, need new un-italicizing function to save time.

--------------------------------

Vectors and some over variables are often written non-italics. Even though I can change the font and whether all the variables have italics or not (pg 285, user manual), it would be nice to have a command like "utal" to un-italic variables. It's quite tedious to jump back and forth between needing many italic variables and a few between equtions. If I need to write a paper with many (e.g.) vector equations but also equally many non-vector equations, a lot of time is used up bouncing back and forth between menus or italicizing most of the variables.

--------------------------------

Regarding the plus sign, notice how it clashes with the bold i and bold j. It takes away from the looks of the equation. It makes it look ... heavy. It's not font dependent. I tried a few fonts like the default Liberation Serif and also Times New Roman.

--------------------------------

I threw in a sum equation because I noticed the function is not aligned with the center of the Capital Sigma (like on pg 282, user manual).

--------------------------------

Side Comments:
1. hat j is not aligned in italics as well as hat i (little off) and hat k (perfect).
2. It would be nice for a command for aligning equations, like addressed on pg 284 where a matrix is used instead. I do a lot of rearranging so I could really use that functionality.
3. Thank you! :D

If I type your formula, the plus signs are not bolded.
If you try the this formula you will see the difference between both plus signs:

bold hat u = { 1 over A } left [ { A _ x bold hat i bold + A _ y bold {hat j} + A _ z bold hat k } right ]

Bets regards. JBF

Maybe try with a fresh 5.3: it has a new font engine.

Also, do you use this setting: Tools - Options - LibreOffice - View - Use OpenGL for all rendering?

Set to NEEDINFO.
Change back to UNCONFIRMED, if the problem persists. Change to RESOLVED WORKSFORME, if the problem went away.

Variables are adjusted to be non-italic in the Formula Editor

Format -> Fonts dialog... Modify -> Variables and uncheck Italic

Also, you can retain greek italic lower case by setting Tools -> Options -> Advanced: Expert Configurations dialog and search for GreekCharStyle. Select it and Edit -- set value to 2 from default of 0.

Lowercase greek letters will be Italic, uppercase will be regular.

The OpenSymbol font adjustments for bug 103740 will resolve the "plus" sign issue.
