Description DP 2016-11-07 10:45:22 UTC
The current auto-hide behaviour of the tool bars in impress is confusing and visually annoying.

The constant changing in size of the slide area every time a different object is selected (resulting in toolbars popping in and out of the toolbar area) is rather unnerving, and makes working in impress a quite unpleasant experience.

Furthermore, there is no added value to this functionality. Automatically hiding or revealing toolbars only appears to be a rather bad imitation of the behaviour observed in other software, where specific toolbars are available for specific objects. Yet, the crucial difference between current libreoffice behavior and that of other proprietary software is that, in the proprietary software) the appearance and disappearance of such toolbars is visually and functionally silent: The toolbar is merely an extra menu which the user may or may not decide to use, and it doesn't change the visible toolbars and buttons (and especially, doesn't constantly re-dimensionates the working area).

I would like to ask for this feature to be removed from Impress (and any other libreoffice software where it is implemented), in the spirit of improving user experience and usability.

Hi DP,

Thanks for reporting here. Can you please be specific in which toolbars (where/flooting or not) at what actions? That helps evaluating your request.

Hi Cor,
Thanks a lot for the fast follow-up!

I have noticed the mentioned behavior working on impress on slides that include text boxes, images imported from external files and shapes. For instance, clicking on the text-box makes the text-formatting toolbox appear, deselecting it or selecting a different object removes it. The same is for the image (which shows the image format toolbox) and shapes (showing the shape-formatting toolbox). I have not tried any other kind of objects, but I can only assume they behave similarly.

Also, none of these toolboxes appears floating, but embedded with the other default toolbars at the top of the window.

Let me know if there is any further information I can provide,
Best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

When I start a presentation (5.2.3.3 or daily recent)
add a shape and text box
change focus from outline area to shape or text box and to edit mode, I see _no_ tool bars popping up..
There is a contextual change in the side bar, and for outline area's a line tool bar appears docked at the right side of the formatting toolbar.
No change of editing area for me.

Note that the contextual behavior of toolbars in LibreOffice is as old as OpenOffice.org 1.x or so..
So hmm. can't understand the problem.
Maybe you opened and docked a toolbar yourself at a position that changed the work area when it (dis-)appears?

Occasionally there is an issue with annoying behavior of toolbars - we usually fix that. So if we miss something.. :)
Thanks,

Hello again,

To your comments:

"When I start a presentation (5.2.3.3 or daily recent) add a shape and text box change focus from outline area to shape or text box and to edit mode, I see no tool bars popping up..

As far as I understand, that depends on whether the particular toolbar was floating or docked on any of the toolbar areas the last time it was used. Regardless, this appearing / disappearing of the toolbars (whether docked or floating) is precisely the behaviour I want to disable, as whenever the toolbars appear / disappear, the working area of the slide auto-resizes, along with the current slide and everything else in the screen, which is quite annoying.

"Note that the contextual behavior of toolbars in LibreOffice is as old as OpenOffice.org 1.x or so.."

Regardless of how old/new this feature is, it is still annoying and disorienting

"So hmm. can't understand the problem.

No, I haven't done that

Best,
Daniel

A visible toolbar, hided ticking with View > Toolbar > <name> should not appear automatically.
If you have a specific example that behaves different, pls let us know.

This is not the problem I am talking about. I have not changed anything in the View>Toolbar menu. This comments are deviating from the actual issue: Toolbar appearing and disappearing when clicking on different object types, causing a constant re-sizing of the slide's workspace, a feature that is extremely annoying, and makes working in slides a pain in the eyes.

Sorry for not understanding you. And thanks for explaining.
This is clearly a wont'fix'.

This behavior generates constant changes of place of the page, not only in impress but also in writer.
Please change it this is very annoying
Comment 9 Cor Nouws 2017-02-19 20:06:19 UTC
@davidzini: if you think there are argument, different then already mentioned in this issue, could you please be so kind to post screen prints showing and exactly explaining the situation before and after the said problematic behavior?
It might well be that I oversee something, but so far all words couldn't make it clear to me. Thanks for your help. Cor
