Description Ilario Gottardello 2016-11-16 15:22:41 UTC
Good morning, in our corporation we have some Word Templates that can't be opened correctly by Libreoffice Writer. There are some images that are posinitioned wrongly and some text that have incorrect orientation.

Unfortunately I can't attach them here because there are some logos etc, but those images are the ones that manifest the bug. I have prepared the templates, word files, odf files and pdf's, could I send them to you so you give them a review to see what is misinterpreted by Writer?

Thank you very much

Hello,
does this problem concern recent Word Templates Files or very old one(*)?

If it concerns recent files, it may be better to move this bug in the LibreOffice/filters section by setting Product to LibreOffice and Component to filters...

(*) i.e currently, Document Liberation does contain some filters for Word files, but only for very old ones: DOS Word files and Classic Mac Word files: v1-v5
Comment 2 Ilario Gottardello 2016-11-22 11:06:36 UTC
Hello,

the models are Microsoft Office Word 97 - 2003 dot files, so I moved the bug in the categories you suggested!

Thank you very much

Please just replace the images with some example images and the text with blind text, then share the document here.

The document is saved in multiple formats (doc, docx, odt, pdf). From the pdf you see how it should be opened, but with Writer you actually get three different behaviours (none of them correct)

Also this file is opened wrongly by Writer, in the pdf you see what it should look like

I attached two documents that are not opened correctly. Both documents are saved in doc, docx, odt and pdf formats. Bear in mind that changeing the images modify slightly the document, so maybe some other incorrect behaviour is hidden by doing this; nonetheless it's already representative of the problem.

Thank you very much

Yep, I confirm the problems, but it would be great to get the actual .dot file as otherwise this is not so scientific ;)

The original .dot files have logos and if I try to modify them I will change anchorage etc, so if they are really necessary I prefer to send them in private...

Well, you can send the .dot files to me via email and I can try to replace the logos in MSO so the problem remains.

I've sent you the dot files by email! Thank you

Ok I tried with MSO 2013.

First of all, each of these problems should be in their own bug report (vertical text not being vertical, image placement).

Unfortunately, when I edited the .dot file with the vertical text problem in MSO 2013, the produced new .dot file created a document in MSO 2013 where the vertical text was not visible anywhere. It *was* visible in LibreOffice, going horizontally inside the text area.

When I edited the file with header image placement problems in MSO 2013 and inserted new images in place of the existing ones, there was no problem in LibreOffice with their placement.

In light of this, it is evident that the .dot files would need to be edited in the same Microsoft Office version as they were produced in. I simply cannot produce reliable anonymized versions of them.

Furthermore, the .dot is a binary format and obsolete. It is questionable, if we should sacrifice resources to support it.

I will add needsDevAdvice to request developer input.

But are the dot files really necessary? I thought the real problem was that the doc files are not interpreted correctly

Well, the standard version of office at my workplace is Office 2007

It could surely be helpful to split the bug report in various bug reports, one for each problem, and if you tell me how you prefer, I will do it.

I will already be very happy if Writer will be able to open the doc files correctly!

I understood that the doc/docx/odt files were created by opening the .dot file in LibreOffice. The original title of your report was "Difficulty importing office templates".

If you now want to change this to be about opening non-template files produced by Microsoft Office, I think it would be better to close this and open new reports (so many comments already etc.).

In the new reports, be sure to mention "This file was created with Microsoft Office 2007" etc. so there is no need to add comments requesting information.
Comment 14 Ilario Gottardello 2016-12-05 16:53:42 UTC
Well, using Writer that template opens wrongly, so I used Word 2007 to create doc and docx files, but even those are opened wrongly.

I tought that correcting the .doc bugs would probably correct the .dot bug.
Comment 15 Buovjaga 2016-12-05 17:00:05 UTC
Ok, please create new reports for the vertical text and image placement problems. Closing.
