On trying to upgrade to version 5.1.6 LibreOffice appears to install correctly but when I try to open the application it runs 'Verify', runs to the end and then hangs indefinitely.
Having to revert to version 4.3.5.2.

Are you installing the language pack before you run LibreOffice once?

If so you are impacted by bug 93331 and related bug 89657

Work around is simply install LibreOffice package and run it once, and then install the language pack.
