Description Martin 2017-01-02 19:53:54 UTC
Description:
I installed LibreOffice on an iMac for a friend which had one Admin user and two other (non-admin) users. The app only showed up in the Applications folder for the Admin user and not in the Applications folders for the two other users. I had to use the Terminal to execute "sudo chown root:wheel LibreOffice.apm" in the /Applications directory, then it became visible to the other users as well.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Get an iMac
2. Set up at least one non-admin user
3. Log-in as the Admin user and install LibreOffice

Actual Results:
Using the vanilla install, there was no LibreOffice in the non-admin user's Applications folder.

Expected Results:
It would be better if there was an icon for LibreOffice in the non-admin user's Applications folder.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
The visibility of the app to the non-admin users(s) is granted when executing the following in a Terminal window:-

sudo chown root:wheel LibreOffice.apm

I think the OS is OSX 10.10 or maybe 10.12 (it's not my machine and not at my home so I can't check easily). It was purchased last month so it will be current.
If you need me to be specific then I can get the info in a couple of days.
Thanks for your help.

It's fine.

Adding Alex to CC to get some sage advice.

@Martin : when you mention "vanilla", which version of LibreOffice do you mean exactly ? Do you mean the version provided in the AppStore, or did you download LibreOffice from the TDF website ?

LibreOffice certainly needs Admin rights for installation of the main app and any language packs, however, I don't know for certain that any particular rights are requiredd to just start the app bundle (or even see it in the Applications folder), I would have to check.

I downloaded the installer from the LibreOffice web site. I was logged-in to the machine as the Admin user and I followed the insall instructions. The final step is to drag the icon from the left of the dialogue box to the right (into the applications folder). I think this creates the new isntance with the Owner and Group relating to the user I was logged in as. When I realised the other non-admin users on the system would not be able to see the LibreOffice app I checked the properties (using ls -lah) and saw that all the other apps were root:wheel (don't ask me why...). So all I did was chown root:wheel and that fixed the problem. Maybe the icon dragging is the key issue - not sure if there is a work-around to that. If not, just a note in the documentation would do for people like me who are setting up a multi-user machine (you'd expect a level of competency to use command line).

No repro with LO 5303 OSX 10.12.3

I created an unprivileged user, then logged in as that user. After OSX had finished setting up the user profile and the default desktop, I navigated to Applications in the Finder and double-clicked on LibreOffice with the mouse. The application started, and I was able to open a blank Writer document.

No need to fiddle with the attributes of the app bundle.

@Martin : could you check whether you still have this problem with either the latest 5.2.x or 5.3.x versions ?
