Description James Perreault 2017-01-16 07:33:43 UTC
Description:
I thought I had an issue with Ubuntu, but it now appears to be an issue with LibreOffice 5.2.

I have installed several additional fonts into my operating system. My OS also has two different versions of Libreoffice installed. LibreOffice 4.2 and LibreOffice 5.2. When I open an application (impress/write/calc) in version 4.2, I have access to all the system installed fonts. When I use office 5.2; some of the system installed fonts are missing or are inaccessable.

I have tried this on Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 14.04. Same results regardless of which linux distro I'm running. Ubuntu 16.04 has a known issues with installing new fonts. This issue doesn't occur on Ubuntu 14.04 which is why I decided to go back to an older version of the operating system.

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 , I installed the additional fonts required to meet my companies document guidelines. The fonts installed with out an issue. I then created a test document with Impress 4.2 Everything worked as expected, my newly installed fonts were accessible in my document. Because the new documents were created in Libreoffice 5.2, and my current installed version of Libreoffice was 4.2, I had upgraded to Libreoffice 5.2 to maintain compatibility with my newer work. Ubuntu 14.04 includes Libreoffice Office 4.2. Ubuntu 16.04 includes Libreoffice 5.0. both verions of office are 32 Bit x86.

Since Ubuntu 14.04 LTS included the older office I downloaded the 32bit DEB version of LibreOffice 5.2 and re-tested. What I found was that system installed fonts that worked under version 4.2 are missing in LibreOffice 5.2.

In addition, documents created under Libreoffice 4.2 when opened in Office 5.2 would automatically reformat. This could be due to the fonts being substituted as Office thinks they're missing, but this is only speculation at this point.

At this point all computer had clean loads both times. Same fonts loaded. Libreoffice 4.2 works flawlessly. When installing Libreoffice 5.2, (both versions present on the same PC) When creating the same simple document, Libreoffice is unable to access all the available installed system fonts. I don't know why or even how to make office 5.2 refresh the font cache.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Clean OS Load - Wipe and install
2.Install New Fonts - Accessible from other applications.
3.Created the same document in Office 4.2 and 5.2 - 4.2 works as expected. 5.2 is missing fonts

Actual Results:
LibreOffice 4.2 Ubuntu 14.04 32 Bit x86. All Fonts are available
Libreoffice 5.2 Ubuntu 15.04 32 Bit x86. Select fonts are available
Specifically installed Heletica Neue ULTRA light - Can be seen in 4.2. When a document is created in 5.2 can only access Helvetica Neue. Ultra light (in the system) can not be accessed.

Expected Results:
Should be able to access all system installed fonts regardless of what version is used.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Clean load for both. No customization was used. Default settings

Thank you for the detailed report.
I guess 5.2. means 5.2.4.2 as marked in Version. 4.2. should also be reported like that, precisely.
Please always test also with LO next version (now it's 5.3.0.1) and current LO master version (5.4 alpha) from from http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/
There's an ongoing work and changes, as you can see in Bug 103514.

Since your report is Linux only, I'll mark so, without testing, until further testing.

The bug previously reported happens in Windows 10, Ubuntu 16.04 and Linux Mint Serena when using LibreOffice 5 and newer. I am using Office 5.3.0 on windows 10 with the same results.

It appears as if ...to use a Microsoft Term...be a "Undocumented Feature"?

When creating a new text box in LibreOffice Impress; If you want to choose a specific font, one will notice some of fonts are missing. This appears to be the way that LibreOffice "groups" fonts together. What this means is; if I want to use a specific font contained within a family, I must first create my text box then choose the font family and only when I choose the "More options" can I select the exact font I want.

In previous versions of LibreOffice this step was unnecessary as all fonts were available from the font list.

The change appears to have been introduction with the release of LibreOffice 5. Unfortunately the grouping of the fonts has made using LibreOffice unnecessarily clumsy. It would be nice to have been given the option to enable/disable this feature.

I use multiple different fonts contained within one font family in a single document. It would have been nice to have the option to disable this font organization feature. I can see why someone who has hundreds of fonts would want to organize them this way but its been a real source of frustration for me.

I have confirmed that this has only happened since LibreOffice 5.0 and later on all operating systems.

Is there a way to revert my current version of office 5.xx.xx back to office 4.xx.xx?

SO I guess there will be no fix anytime soon? It seems The only work around... and it's a pain in the butt is to highlight the text then choose character... then select the font family... then finally pick the font you want. I don't understand

James

IT doesn't matter what OS. Windows, Linux 16.04 LTS, Linux Mint Sarah, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 all have the same issue.

As I said. All versions of Libre office 5.0 on up seem to share this bug.

He is talking about Helvetica Neue Ultra Light.

Ok, so you apparently go to the "More options" in Impress from the Sidebar Character formatting section in the properties from its hamburger-style icon. In the dialog that pops up I assume you pick "Ultra light" from the Style dropdown.

Sure, we can swing this by the design team, but my spider sense is tingling for a WONTFIX status..

Cannot confirm this issue. I'm on Arch Linux where ephifonts would be the package for Helvetica Neue. But for some reason the package manager failed, so I downloaded the ttf directly from http://www.ephifonts.com/free-helvetica-font-helvetica-neue.html, placed it at the right folder (/usr/share/fonts/TTF/) and updated the font cache (fc-cache). Et voliá, Helvetica Neue is listed under fonts in Libreoffice.

So it's likely not our bug if something fails. You should verify that this font is installed properly.
(And the issue is definitely not UX relevant.)

Nope: "multiple font faces within a font family into a single font resource". If you have a separate Helvetica_Neue_Ultra_Light.otf file, then it is not about bug 103596.

I don't know why this was confirmed.
When installed in Windows 7 or Ubuntu (13 .otf files), only single Helvetica Neue font is shown in MSO, as in LO (in accordance with Comment 10).
I don't see a way to separately choose font family (light, medium, thin).
I tested also LO 4.2, also single Helvetica Neue.
So I set this to Needinfo to explain what's the bug and expected behavior, with concrete sample, preferably some LO included font.

Note: Helvetica Neue is a commercial font.
