Several Hebrew letters typed in Writer

Any typed Hebrew letters is displayed as Gibberish.
Tried several fonts at Writer and Calc.
Screenshot attached.

The issue is a regression of 5.3 version, as 5.2.x and earlier works great with Hebrew on this system.

Version: 5.3.1.2
Build ID: 1:5.3.1-0ubuntu1~yakkety0
CPU Threads: 4; OS Version: Linux 4.8; UI Render: default; VCL: kde4; Layout Engine: new;
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); Calc: group

A possible cause of the issue:
Default Style -> Font -> CTL Font is auto reset to Tahoma no matter that I choose (Apply, OK and Writer restart).
And Tahoma is problematic as "This font has not been installed. The closest available font will be used".

Reset of the Default Style didn't fix the issue as well.

It's not about opening a Hebrew document (works fine).

It's about creating new document.

Not reproduced and my CTL font is FreeSans. To test I pasted עברית‎.

Is the package from Ubuntu or from ppa or TDF's package?

My package is from the LibreOffice Fresh ppa.

Any difference, if you launch with
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3 libreoffice

or

SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk libreoffice

I just downgraded to LibreOffice 5.2.6 (LO 5.2 ppa).

I will probably give another try to LO 5.3 soon, but for now I just can't work without Hebrew.

You can use a parallel version: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel/Linux

You can even check these fresh master builds: http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/?C=M;O=A

After installing a clean Kubuntu 17.04, I can't reproduce it any more.
Version: 5.3.1.2
Build ID: 1:5.3.1-0ubuntu2
CPU Threads: 4; OS Version: Linux 4.10; UI Render: default; VCL: kde4; Layout Engine: new;
Locale: en-US (en_IL); Calc: group

My guess is that after several upgrades and downgrades of LO for the last several years, something gonna wrong with the profile.

Should I close the issue?

I think it might also be something in Ubuntu 17.04 that fixed it (there is one other bug that was fixed by upgrading.
