Description Martin Srebotnjak 2017-04-20 12:07:45 UTC
Description:
In the last week the master received new commands for notebookbar where captions of notebookbar subtabs (I expect this from po file, I haven't seen the UI itself yet) are divided according to en-US context key, e.g. "Edit" is split into two localizable strings, "E" and "dit". Another one, "Format" is split into "F", "o" and "rmat". Since this might be OK for English, the system should support also all other 100+ languages and their context keys for these commands, but it does not.
I propose all these must be divided into three groups "pre-string", "context-key" and "after-string", even if some of these will be empty in English. This would allow for better l10n, if you cannot think of any other way to code these context keys in a less complicated way.

Since this is not a l10n bug, but a UI bug preventing proper l10n process, I am filing it under UI.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Translate po files of UI for 5.4.0.a1
2. Open sw/uiconfig/swriter/ui.po (notebookbar_groupedbar_full.ui)
3. Find strings like "F", "o" and "rmat"

Actual Results:
Labels in notebookbar cannot be properly localized (as in menu bar).

Expected Results:
Labels in notebookbar can be properly localized, as in menu bar.

Reproducible: Always

Puh-lease, design team, read this: https://rimas.kudelis.lt/2010/06/14/software-that-is-actually-localizable

How do you expect me to translate, e.g., the word “Styles” if you split it up as “S” and “tyles”? 🙄

The issue was brought to attention (hard to spot in a review of 3000+ lines, sorry). It has to be fixed, of course.

Please add in the future the variant of the Notebookbar you are talking about. The command in this case is actually a label and only relevant in one of the implementations.

thank's for your work. The bug was fixed and now I also know how it will work.
