I have installed LibreOffice 5.1, I have installed all the dictionaries from the languages I want to use the spellchecker works fine in all. Unluckily, the grammar checker does not work. Of course, I have made grammar mistakes on purpose, it fails to recognise them. So I have installed LibreOffice 5.3; still, the very same problem occurs.

Actual Results:
LibreOffice is not working at its fullest.

I expect to have the solution from you.

Hi Nora,

Can you provide the steps to reproduce the issue and language(s) you try to use?

Did you enable the spell checking? You can do that in Tools menu > Automatic Spell Checking.

Moreover you should check the language of the document on the status bar or in Tools menu > Language whether is is proper or not.
Comment 2 Nora Lerena 2017-05-01 21:55:23 UTC
First, I checked that all the language I wanted to use were installed, I looked up language language settings language support install/remove languages, I added the missing ones, English UK, Spanish Argentina, Italian and Portuguese. I ended up installing all the language varieties.

Spellchecker worked fine, I did what you mentioned in your email; the problem arises when it comes to grammar correction, it does not check it.

You should check whether the grammar check is enabled in Tools menu > Spelling and grammar. At the bottom of the appearing window there is an option named Check grammar. Make sure that that option is enabled.

I have just done what you told me but I can't do it, there is something that doesn't allow me to check the grammar box, however, when I click on options all the grammars features are checked. What can the problem be then?

Hi,

Did you install also a grammar checker, in your extension manager?
Else, see here:
https://help.libreoffice.org/Writer/Checking_Spelling_and_Grammar
LanguageTool provides it for multiple languages, but there are other ones.

As I said before, I can't check the check grammar option from the spelling check window, I have added the dictionaries as well. still I cannot figure out what the problem is.

Could you copy here the content of About LibreOffice window (in Help menu)?

If you can provide the exact steps you made to enable the grammar check (including dictionary installation), I can try to reproduce your issue.

Hi there,

This is the text from the About in the Help Menu:

Version: 5.1.6.2
Build ID: 1:5.1.6~rc2-0ubuntu1~xenial2
CPU Threads: 8; OS Version: Linux 4.4; UI Render: default;
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); Calc: group

First, I install the dictionaries in language setting > add/ remove. Then I added dictionaries from Tools > Spelling And Grammar > Spelling > Options > Get dictionaries, which are when the window spelling and grammar pops out, I cannot check the Check Grammar box, there is another window which pops out which reads Libre 5.1 The spellcheck is complete, I click OK and then the check grammar box is gone, I cannot check.

Then I have libreoffice removed, I carried out the very same procedure.

That's all I can recall

Hi,

Thanks for the quick answer.

You can only enable Check grammar box if you have an installed grammar checker extension.

I added the Spanish dictionary to LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 and there was no Check grammar box after the popup window as you wrote.

After I installed LanguageTool from https://extensions.libreoffice.org/extensions/languagetool, I was able to enable the grammar checking.

Could you try to install LanguageTool as Jacques suggested to see whether the problem still persists?
Comment 10 Nora Lerena 2017-05-07 15:45:28 UTC
Ta, you both, for your help, the problem seems to persists I did what you told me. What else can I do?
Comment 11 Vera 2017-05-07 16:18:00 UTC
You can try to reset your LibreOffice profile which is located in /home/<user name>/.config/libreoffice.

1) Quit LibreOffice.
2) Rename the LibreOffice profile directory.
3) Start LibreOffice.

LO will create a new profile directory. You won't lost your previous profile because of step 2.

You can find more information about profile: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile

Does the problem still persist after the new profile?

Nothing seems to work, isn't there any other office suite to replace it?

Can you explain exactly what doesn't work?
Couldn't you create new LibreOffice profile, couldn't install the LanguageTool with the new profile or couldn't enable the grammar check?

With LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 I can enable grammar check after I installed LanguageTool.

Did you try with LO 5.1 or 5.3?
